Game 1 today was a spirited affair... complete with some raised tempers and a couple of minor skirmishes after the whistle. Team Peplinski came away with the victory after goals from Hudler and McGrattan. And Berra posted yet another complete game shutout

The pairing of Baertschi and Hudler were buzzing all game, and had numerous quality scoring chances. Granlund was ok, but not great as their center, and was replaced by Galliardi about halfway through the tilt. Galliardi was surprisingly effective in the role and was also ver strong in the faceoff circle throughout... unlike Granlund who may not have won a single draw in the 50 minutes of play.

Bouma and Poirier also both played strong games going hard to the net and creating havok in front of Karri Ramo. Bouma even drew the ire of SOB on one occaision and the two had to be separated by the officials before play could resume.

On the other side of the ice all three centers had especially strong games. Monahan and Knight both look comfortable and at ease playing alongside and against NHL competition, and Backlund seemed to be all over the ice every time he was on. All three players generated good offensive opportunities for their linemates and were noticeably strong defensively as well. Knight took a hard slapshot to the ankle on a shot block with about 15 minutes left, and hobbled off the ice on one foot but didn't miss a shift so hopefully that means he's ok.

Cammalleri and David Jones both also looked much better today than yesterday as their line controlled the puck well and generated a number of good scoring opportunities although they were ultimately unable to beat Berra who played another strong albeit unflashy game

I hope Jones puts it all together this season, I always liked the guy. But that was always the most frustrating part of him, for a big guy playing so timid, stopped driving to the net with purpose. At times he just seemed to wonder to the front and not really sure what he was going to do when he got there.

would be a tough sell I think....needs to stay reds/oranges/yellows/blacks....maybe introduce some dark DARK blues?....

I like this!

Actually, I was wrong about the goaltending matchup. MacDonald's at the far end, not Berra.

Michael Ferland opened the scoring in the 2nd game finishing off a pass from Corban Knight and putting the puck past Joey Mac. Monahan and Cammalleri would do the same shortly thereafter working a 2 on 1 to perfection with Cammy finishing the play by firing into a wide open net.

Jooris narrowed the gap firing a lazer off the post and in, beating Ramo from the top of the circle.

Monahan would soon restore the 2 goal lead though, repeating Jooris' trick and firing one in off the post himself.

He'd add his second of the game only 6 minutes later beating Macdonald from in close. He's lined up between Paul Byron and Blair Jones now, but it doesn't seem to be slowing him down.

As an aside though, Byron's been very good in both games so far. He's been very strong on his skates and has been using his speed very effectively.

David Jones puts team McCrimmon up 5-1 putting his own rebound up and over MacDonald after a great feed from Cammalleri.

Blair Jones and Curtis Glencross both left the ice for a cooling down period after Glencross would take exception to a slash from Jones, slamming him into the end glass... both players dropped gloves and Jones even threw a couple of punches that didn't connect before officials were able to separate them.

Ramo has had a very strong second game here, making some highlight reel saves. Sieloff and SOB have both played very strong physical games and Weatherspoon and Gio have been very effective moving the puck and slowing the game down for team McCrimmon.

Monahan has been the star of this one though and may be making a case for more than just a 9 game stint with the big club.

So... if Monahan were to make the team how would you feel about lines like this?

Glencross - Stajan - Stempniak
Cammalleri - Monahan - D. Jones
Baertschi - Backlund - Hudler
Bouma - B. Jones - Galliardi

Ferland, Jackman, McGrattan
