I just read this propaganda peice on tsn.
Franson saw his role grow and grow last season, from under 14 minutes in January to upwards of 22 in April, and the now 26-year-old delivered, finishing amongst the leaders at his position in scoring. In addition to his increased responsibility, which included first duty power-play, Franson also showed more assertiveness defensively, with prodding from Carlyle paying dividends. A breakthrough 2013 continued in the postseason, with the B.C. native and unsigned restricted free agent adding three goals and six points in nearly 23 minutes against the Bruins. He and Gardiner teamed together in the final three games of the first round against Boston – with Fraser sidelined – and proved Toronto's most effective pair, a preview perhaps of what Carlyle may opt for this season. - robin_steele264

I think people get locked into these top 6, bottom 6, top 4, bottom 2 minsets and thats all that matters... He needs to start seeing some tougher assignments now... - senstroll
I agree with this. People also seem to think things remain static and set in stone. Line combos and d-pairings change over the course of a game, that's what a coach does. You don't slot players on the depth chart only by who they play with, it comes down to assignments and how much they play. When Weber and Suter were up around 27 minutes each in Nashville, it wasn't a case of them only being paired together. They get sent out sometimes with some other guy, ie. you play two minutes on the PP, odds are you're not going back out on the ice on your next turn with your regular so-called partner. |

I think this is a lot of what people were trying to say. Franson played the lowest quality of opponents last year. He did get bumped up as the year went on but a lot of it was pp mins. Until he regularly gets shifts against someone other than 4th lines then its hard to say he wasn't bottom pairing.
I like franson, i think he's a big piece going forward. We need to find out if he can handle more responsibility. |

there will not be a big hole in D lineup with him sitting out. He has to realize that if he sits out, the team will barely miss him, and his negotiating power will be completely gone.
even with him the lineup, I still see him in the bottom pairing with Fraser and getting PP time. |

Heard this on the radio this morning.
Senators fan wearing a Leaf jersey - had to put his name on it so no one would steal that prized jersey away from him. |

he was still the bottom pair.
the reason his ice time went up was:
1: PP time and
2: opposition teams would approach games with the leafs as grinding checking games. so we saw a lot more of their checking lines than normal. so because they tried to wear the leafs down (beat them at their own game so to speak) that meant that franson fraser got more minutes.. because their matchups were on the ice more. |

he should be signed.. 2 to 2.5 million range.. if he proves he can handle tougher assignments.. then big contract next time
but not until he proves it.
his most successful years were under trotz and carlyle who both sheltered him from hard defensive assignments. one trick pony up to this point.. if he proves himself worth, fantastic.. if not.. well then he is on the right pay scale. |
