Pronger had the size and intimidation factor going for him and a heavier slapshot but Howe could skate circles around him, had by far a more dynamic wrist shot and was the better coverage defenseman as well. Coffey was one-dimensional -- an even better skater than Howe and was the NHL's most dangerous offensive defenseman of his era -- but was a defensive liability.

Ultimately, Howe was still the best to wear a Flyers uniform. I'd take him over Pronger on the same basis I'd have taken Nicklas Lidström over Pronger. I just wish Howe's bad back hadn't kept him out of the lineup so often after his third Norris Trophy first-runner up season (1986-87). Even then, if you look at the team's record with/without him in the lineup and his still eye-popping plus-minuses even in the dark years when the team started missing the playoffs, it's pretty much a no-brainer that he was the best the franchise ever had.
