He can be really good and still not top five. Just shows the insane depth the Blues have.

True. Terrifying team.

Decent blog but if talent is talent then colarado should be there instead of Tampa.
- JETSWIN

Stamkos is worth 2 Colorado players and I'm certain the reigning Art Ross winner is worth the other 3.

Not feeling the Philly hype at all. If that is their top 5, yikes.

You don't think Letang is a top 5 player on the Penguins? Who would you replace him with from that roster?

On the penguins sure. In terms of defensmen, no way.

For the Penguins he's top, top 5 defensmen in the nhl, no way. Besides did you see his play against the Islanders and Bruins. Didn't do very well.

List of defensmen I'm taking before him include...
Pietrangelo
Weber
Kieth
Seebrook
Suter
Chara
Karlsson
Yandle
OEL
Edler
Carlson

- DTF69

Did you read when Clouts wrote one of the top 5 defensmen in the NHL? That's the point, his play in the playoffs, specifically against the bruins exposed his game.

The only D I wouldn't take instead of Letang is Yandle, and only by a hair.

His fancy stats are absurdly impressive and so are his adjusted fancy stats.

Also, if you want to judge him being any good over the Boston series Malkin and Sid and Neal and Kunitz are all garbage and he was actually pretty good against the Isles.

So you have guys like Zibanejad and Drouin as reasons for a teams top 5 being good, but keep the Oilers off because of the exact same reasons you have those two on?

Those players are surrounded by established NHL players like Spezza, Ryan, Stamkos and St. Louis. The Oilers are surrounded by the bars of a crib.

Yep his 5 goals this year were mighty impressive, ranking 31st in the league. He racks up point playing with two of the top 3 forwards in the world.

Top 5: Jonathan Quick, Drew Doughty, Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and Anze Kopitar
You can understand why this team won a cup. Quick is perhaps the best goalie in the world right now. Doughty can play like the best defenseman, and Kopitar when he is healthy is impossible to contain. Richards and Carter might be ass-hats off the ice, and they don't always show up. Just in the playoffs, when winning actually matters. Great group of five.

Top 5 Players - Erik Karlsson, Jason Spezza, Bobby Ryan, Craig Anderson and Mika Zibanejad
Ah, the first to include a player not for what they've done, but because of what's to come. Zibanejad is going to be an absolute force this season. Big, gifted, gritty...Love this kid. If I was coaching Team USA at the Olympics, I'd put Anderson in net. Karlsson is the best defenseman in hockey. Adding Ryan is going to make up for the loss of Alfredsson and then some.

the contradictions never end

C'Mon man! He didn't get all 5 of his goals in the 3 games Crosby managed to suit up for. I didn't see a guy like Edler putting up those numbers when the Sedins were the highest scoring players in the league.

Surely not top 5 but would say in between 10-15 for sure.

If its so easy to put up points like that with Sid and Geno how come none of the other Pens dmen can do it? Why is it that with Letang on the ice their Corsi thingies are like 10% higher than with any other dman on their roster?

He's also a huge part of the Pens bottom 2 lines not getting murdered as hard as they should be. The Pens are like 4 forwards and 8 scrubs up front but he does a great job not letting those scrubs look as scrubby.

Just because a team learned how to neutralize him doesn't make him bad. Toronto and Chicago both found ways to make Chara look pedestrian but peeps still love him.

He's inconsistent. Especially defensively. I know, I've seen the Raangerss make him look bad. It''s hard for the Rangers to make Crosby or Malkin look bad, actually they never look bad against the Rangers. They kill the Rangers.

Change out Johnson for Stastny and Varlamov for O'Reilly and I'll give them probably 16 on his list.
