I still worry about the coaching. Laviolette has to force these guys to play better two way hockey, from the forwards on back. They have to keep the offensive aggression up, but temper it a bit, so they can avoid the overpursuit issues that plagued them the last couple seasons and saw all 3 forwards getting caught deep on dump ins and leading to odd man rushes.
- Jsaquella

I'm hoping that the better balance of talents on the backend and a big boost at the 2C position helps temper out Lavi's aggressive system. But you're right, the team defense on the whole will have to improve quite a bit from what we saw last year.

Contract length/term, injury concerns, Columbus. But Meszaros over Grossmann is odd.

Is anyone else absolutely amazed that Mount Rushmore (the monument) exists? That's got to be one of the craziest pieces of art ever.

Kind of a slow day, but I saw a picture of Mt. Rushmore, and was thinking about the time/planning/skill it took to create it. And to think they'd actually planned to do more than they did until funds ran out, it's crazy.

He wasnt all of our problems but people seem to forget that with an even worse defense than what Bryzgalov played behind, Mason played much better. That proved to me that Bryz sucks, defense or no defense. A good goalie can steal games. Bryz just gave them away if anything.

Ok, thats fine. Bryz is still just mediocre regardless. Just an average goalie that needs great defense to put up good numbers. When the game was on the line he NEVER MADE THE SAVE.

You want me to go back and find video evidence from the draft itself, from guys like Dreger/McKenzie, from local media, and others? Well I won't. Here's Meltzer giving 6 reasons why he shouldn't be rushed (only one of them was Schenn's status):
http://www.hockeybuzz.com...ost_id=36948#.Ugkgv20xBlY

You seriously don't remember tons of pundits saying he wasn't physically ready for the NHL prior to his rookie year? I find that hard to believe, as no one really gave him a chance.

- jmatchett383

It doesn't matter what was said at the draft or during camp. What matters is how the season played out and how Sean couturier played. He played at an NHL and there was a wide open roster spot for him. There isn't a side open roster spot for Laughton. We have players suited for all the roles needed at the moment. Laughton Would have to play lights out to make the team.

For me Bryz took away all those heart stopping moments of a break away because with Bryz you just knew (KNEW) that there was no way he was gonna stop that. EVER.
It wasn't suspenseful it just got sad.
And yes he had to face far too many of them.

Sounds like a double standard to me. Your okay with a subpar defense but expect great goaltending.

I think he'd have to play better than Adam Hall to make the team...

He didnt have the most help, thats for sure. Ive seen much worse and goalies play much better than that. Your absolutely right. He only stopped breakaways if the player didnt go for a deke but even then it was rare when he stopped it.

Not ok with it. I just cant see why people defend him, he got bought out for a reason. Its not just my opinion, its the Philadelphia Flyers opinion and thats the only opinion that matters when it comes to him.

Defensemen are my favorite players on the ice usually and I hold them to high standards. I adore Grossmann. That man saves his goalie's bacon at least 5 or 6 times a game which is why I shake my head when people want to get rid of him. He's been very good for us. I can't wait for Luke and Gus to show up next season with a ton of confidence... Timo is a class act - such a smart player. I have never watched Streit play so I'll hold my opinion. Mez is fantastic when healthy. I really hope that if we keep him he stays that way. And Coburn is damn good as well. There is a reason teams asked for him at the draft. He gets a ton of heat here but played correctly he's very good.
Injuries kill us. I'm still miffed at the hockey gods for Pronger.

I think there was more to it than just 'Bryz sucks'. But his performance was not good enough to justify the investment, I can definitely agree with that.

Frankly, I'm just glad we're getting past this. What a mess.

For the most part he was given and signed a bad contract. More then what he's worth and the length was much too long. Bryzgalov update have been much better here but it doesn't change the fact the defense had to be retooled every bit as much as the defense.

If he had numbers like he had in Phoenix the contract would have been fine. Have you seen his last 3 playoffs numbers? Dont tell me thats all cause of the defense. Thats a joke.

"Bryz sucks" was def a part of the reason. Cause if he didnt suck he would still be a flyer. No doubt
