who was the 2nd line in 97?

brindy is the only one popping into my head

- Crimsoninja

Pat Falloon? Hawerchuk was on that team, I think. Young Zubie?

That 1997 team was not as deep forward wise as I think people like to think it was.

No, they really weren't. They dominated on the way to the Finals, but were pretty mcuh carried offensively by Lindros, LeClair, and Brind'Amour.

Vinny only played about 20 games, I think. He was good when he played, though.

If I remember correctly, he wasn't able to play in the Finals because Hextall accidentally cut his head with a skate in practice.

But what those numbers dont tell you is all the soft goals he allowed, I dont have to tell you what that does to a team in a tight playoff game.....

Sure, but what does scoring futility do to a goalie in a tight series?

It doesn't matter what you are giving up if your team is putting up goose eggs.

It doesnt matter, he should have been shutting them out over 20 overtimes.

Thank for pointing out something totally obvious I already knew.

The Flyers lost to a good Ottawa team in 2003 but they weren't embarrassed even though the player group was largely the same.

And Cechmanek was the goalie in 2003, so I'm not sure how he gets the blame that you seem to be giving him.

My initial point was that Cechmanek was not to blame for their playoff struggles, because the team in front of him performed poorly. They did play better in 2003 than they did in 2002, but it wasn't as if they were scoring in droves.

Primeau had a goal and an assist in 13 games. Gagne had 4 goals and 1 assist. Amonte had a goal and 6 asssts.

In the 2004 playoffs, a lot of guys played much better, but they also had additional firepower.

Primeau exploded and had 14 more points than in 2003. Zhamnov was their second leading scorer & wasn't on the 2003 team. The additions of Markov and Malakhov, who were 2nd and third among skaters in TOI in 2004 was an improvement on the fading Eric Desjardins and Eric Weinrich, who held those spots the year before.

Desjardins didn't fade away, he broke. We tried calling the factory to get a new one, and they gave us a Kimmo Timonen.

He wasn't the same guy in 2002 or 2003 that he had been in the past. Still very solid, but he wasn't the same guy. He had definitely lost a step or two by 2004.

Injuries took their toll on Rico all at once, it was hard to see someone so good go south so fast.

By the time he retired, Desjardins had been beaten up like a 1979 Plymouth that spent 10 years as a smash up derby car. I know one playoff year he played through a torn ACL or MCL(can't recall which).

Patrice Bergeron does this sometimes. He calls those days "week days."

Yeah, Bergeron is insane. What he played through in the Final shows that hockey players are really the toughest athletes in the world, batpoop insane, or so full of OxyContin that they actually can't feel their skin

There are teams out there with just as bad goalies since 2000. Ottawa, Toronto, Islanders, Washington, Atlanta/Winnepeg, Columbus, & Edmonton.

It's odd. The Bruins get Bobby Orr (best defenseman ever). Then they lose him, and a few years later, they get Ray Bourque (highest-scoring defenseman ever, probably 2nd best defenseman ever). They lose Ray Bourque , and a few years later, they get Zdeno Chara (captain of a Cup team, Norris winner).

The Flyers get Mark Howe (2nd/3rd best defenseman of the 80s, HOFer), and then have a run of really bad players, followed up by some more bad players, and then get those level 2 guys (Desjardins/Jonsson/Timonen) and 1 full year of Pronger. Can't we please get that superstar #1 guy for most of his career?

Comparing the Flyers to those teams, in any way, since 2000, doesn't make me feel any better.

I worry more about the level of success the team has had, rather than it's individual members.

The Flyers have been very successful over the past decade or so. They're among the NHL leaders in playoff series won, despite not getting a Stanley Cup. They generally are competitive, if not a serious contender for the Stanley Cup just about every year.

I'd trade all of that success for one Cup.

It's sort of like the Phillies: they won me a World Series during my lifetime, so they get a pass. Frustrating as it may be, they can go 0-162 every year for the rest of my life and I'll be okay with it.

Granted, with the Flyers, I'd care A LOT MORE.

You think Edmonton feels the same. Watching awful hockey for the past 7-8 years with 1 cup. While I would love that cup, its only 1 year of sucess for 10 years of suffering.
