He's from Western PA.

We should be thankful that his family tree actually has branches.

To me it's a no-brainer to pick Cechmanek. Two Bobby Clarke Trophies and a Vezina finalist season did it. He had consistency issues in the playoffs but was mostly the victim of a lack of goal support. There were only three playoff starts of his that were truly horrendous, but two of them were in elimination games.
- bmeltzer

And in those elimination games (one of which was an 8-0 loss where his teammates already looked to be at the 19th hole), he was a man stranded on an island.

based on what exactly?

As JS said in his post my choice was between Cechmanek & Esche.

What he managed to do in just 3 seasons in Philly was nothing short of remarkable. The Flyers all-time stats are hard to discount: 1st in GAA and SV%, #2 in SO (20), #4 in Wins (92)... all that and he never started more than 60-games in any one season.

Cecho is like the anti-Primeau... steady, solid track-record of production and success and all anybody will remember about him is his emotional implosion in the PO's. Primeau underachieved badly for most of his Flyers career, yet one PO run was enough to effectively raise him to sanctified status.

- Tomahawk

*yoink!*

This is the most profound thing you have written here. I am incorporating that into my pro-Cecho repertoire. Thanks!

Legend has it that, should Shea Weber ever make it to the Stanley Cup Finals, the Norweigan fishing village contained in his beard will emerge and wreak havoc upon all mankind.

As resquested, the Flyers top 10 line combos

1. The LCB line: Barber-Clarke-Leach 1974-1976
In 75-76 this line put up numbers that have never been matched by any line in Flyers history and very few lines in NHL history except for those with Gretzky or Lemieux. 140 goals! Leach scored 61 times; Clarke had 89 assists and 118 points and Barber chipped in 50 goals and 112 points. Clarke won his 3rd Hart trophy and both he and Barber were 1st team all stars, Leach had to settle for being a 2nd team all star, finishing behind only Guy Lafleur.

2. The Legion of Doom: Leclair-Lindros-Renberg 1995-1996
Physically dominant, this line was virtually unstoppable during the 1995 lockout season and the 1st half of 95-96 prior to Renberg's injury. All 3 were highly skilled and it was basically impossible to stop their cycle down low. There were many games where they simply looked like men against boys.

3. Propp-Poulin-Kerr mid 80s
Great combo of skill, size and smarts, the best line of the Keenan era

4. Leclair-Lindros-Recchi
Didn't get to play together much and Leclair was already past his peak, but this could still dominate from time to time and was a great combo of size and skill

5. Leclari-Lindros-Jones
Sensing a pattern yet? Lindros was just that good and when paired with Leclair htey were amazing!

6. Lonsberry-Macleish-Dornhoeffer
The 2nd best line of the Bullies era. Macleish would have been a #1 center on most teams and Lonsberry is one of the most underrated forwards in Flyers history.

7. Hartnell-Giroux-Jagr
THe addition of Jagr took Giroux to the next level.

8. Gagne-FOrsberg-Knuble
For the short time Foppa was healthy, this line was awesome!

9. Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek
Can't wait to see how this line performs with a healthy and in shape Hartnell.

10. Propp-Eklund-Tocchet

Just missed the cut:
Schultz-Kindrachk-Saleski
Barber-Clarke-Sittler
Gagne-Primeau-Recchi
Fedyk-Lindros-Rechhi
Leina-Briere-Hartnell
Propp-Linseman-Holmgren

- BiggE

Not a scoring line that ranks up there, but I did like the "Primeau and the Kids Line" that featured Primeau centering Gagne and Justin Williams.

I mostly agree with you, but I do think you're overselling Cechmanek and what he did here.

Rat Patrol definitely should be in the Top 10.

And for whatever reason, I was never as enamored of Keith Jones on the big line as everyone else seems to be.

- johndewar

I liked Mike Maneluk on that line more than Jonesy.

EDIT: Jsaq beat me to this.

Cechmanek had a couple great REGULAR seasons but in the playoffs he was about as abysmal as Bryzgalov........
- GOA88

Explain playoffs of 2001/02? Cechmanek had 1.85 gaa .936 s% and had 1 win thanks in part to a Flyers offense that produced 2 goals in 5 games. Roman's fault?

Yes. He failed to cranium-carom his headers into the opponent's net, soccer-style.
