Chiming in:

I would rather have a chance to win the cup every season with no guarantees, over winning one guaranteed and sucking for 10 years.

But I have no problem with someone who thinks the opposite.

I agree if those are the parameters, but I think the conversation should be,"In retrospect, would you prefer to look back on ten years of legitimate cup competitiveness, or one cup win and nine years of relative crap?"

Just my $.02

Due to popular demand, and the mellowing effect of a little 18 year old Macallan, I have amended my Top 10 Lines in Flyers history to include The Rat Patrol.

I now return to my regularly scheduled drinking.

The legitimate cup competitiveness. If we HAD won the cup in 2004 but sucked out of the playoffs since, I would not be happy.

Would you take this line over the Betts/Lappy/...(Powe?) line in 09/10?

Yup just as good defensively, but with the ability to chip in more offense.

Pat Falloon? Hawerchuk was on that team, I think. Young Zubie?

That 1997 team was not as deep forward wise as I think people like to think it was.

- johndewar

It was kind of a mix all featuring Brindamour:
Brindamour-Prospal-Hawerchuk or Falloon
DiMaio-Brindamour-Hawerchuk or Falloon
and occasionally
Podein-Brindamour-Hawerchuk, Falloon or Klatt

Well, for me personally, I'll take the 1 Cup Victory. It would be hard (and they haven't sucked, they had a few nice runs including Game 7 of the SCF in 2006), but I'd take it.

No question about it. It's an easy answer for any fan who hasn't seen their team win a Championship. No one cares who makes the playoffs with consistency, who wins Divisions, playoff series etc.... At the end of the day that stuff don't mean poop.

As the saying goes, if you're not first, you're last.

So if the Flyers win the Cup this year. And then for whatever reason, they miss the playoffs for 2 Seasons in a row after that. You won't be complaining about it?

The St. Louis Blues had a streak of 25 straight playoff appearances. 1979-2004
What does it mean? Answer: Absolutely nothing.

Not to me it's not. Making the playoffs that frequently and not winning, only magnifies a franchise coming up miniscule.

So now we hope the Flyer continually miss the playoffs instead so as to minimize our weak hearts' being broken by their belief in them. Got it.

Dodged the question. I'll ask again, if the Flyers win the Cup this year. Then miss the playoffs the 2 seasons following that, you won't have any complaints during those Seasons?

Of course not. Not very often are teams one hit wonders. Majority of teams who win Championships are good franchises all around.

i honestly disagree with that. not everything is about the history books. real fans spend a lot of time watching their team. it's almost impossible to watch a team that stinks year after year and remain passionate (although i guess eagles fans would have something to say about that.... (for a large portion of my life, at least))

sure, from an outsiders perspective, only a championship means anything. but when you are in the thick of it and following a team closely year after year, it's not so easy to boil down like that

just my opinion, though

I respect your point of view. Sure everything isn't black and white. Saying which would you rather have a team who wins a cup and then sucks for 10 years is dealing in a extreme hypotheticals. That very rarely happens.

Making the playoffs often means something, because to reach the ultimate goal that is step one.

Fans can enjoy rooting for their team any way they like. It's the right of any fan. If someone enjoys just making the playoffs and not reaching the pinnacle, that is fine by me. I'm not going to force my opinion down anyone's throat.
