I think some are frustrated because the obvious area that needed an upgrade going into the off season was the D.

Now it's looking possible that it could end up being downgraded in favor of adding to goaltending and forwards.

- robin_steele264

Leafs have plenty of good D prospects though, and very few forward prospects with top 6 potential.

D will upgrade naturally over next 2 years. I'm glad they haven't gone out and clogged it up with long term deals.

Deep breath Leaf fans.

Worst case scenario - the Leafs trade Liles to team X and eat half of his cap hit/salary. Yes that's a 1.9 milly cap penalty for the next 3 years (Better than the buyout) but an additional 1.9 in cap space to sign Franson, Fraser and Kadri.

Liles at a salary of 2.1, 2.1 and 1.4 has to be attractive to someone, no?

If we can manage to Keep Franson and lose Liles we will be fine

Last season we started with Holzer and Koska, this season Ranger and Gardiner. thats an upgrade already

- senstroll

I think it was pretty obvious D was a big sore spot at the end of last season too. So far, Nonis has improved it by adding Paul Ranger, but possibly at the expense of Franson. I really really hope that's not how this turns out.

Bozak - playmaker, good on the draws and for whatever the reason they work well together.

Grabovski is not a typical center, he's a shoot first and also puck hog. Having him play with Kessel is a waste of Kessel who is the teams best player.

I'm sorry you lost your favourite player dude, Grabo was a nice player for the team for a while. Time changes and the team evolved.

evidence points to both being more productive apart.

Without Franson the D is worse IMO.

Thanks for trying to make me feel better, but you can trade a player and eat his cap hit too!? Has that ever been done before?

No he's not. But some might be getting frustrated due the the current contract/cap situation Nonis is in regarding him.

There is no statistical data showing Bozak and Kessel "working well together". you are talking out your ass if you believe that, and I dont care if they make a good xbox 360 team. Bozak wins 1 or 2 more draws a game than Grabovski. the limited stats show Kessel had better success in regards to production when with Grabovski.

My pref was to lose both of them and Sign a FA like Lecavalier, I am not a Grabvoski fan, but if you make me pick between him and Bozak its a no brainer.

You keep salary - you also keep cap hit - it's the ONLY way it works under the CBA. Burkie's new rule.

If you keep 50% of salary you keep 50% of cap hit. No other way to do it.

News to me - please explain. LA is eating part of Bernier's 2.9m cap hit?

I've got him in 4th. Rising ....but in 4th.

I find he goes through the motions, and rarely does he ever drive the net like he used to. Basically, how JVR drove the net this past season, Nik used to do it too. I don't know where his balls went, but I never see him on the doorstep anymore. And I'm with you, he was outhussled a lot last season, maybe it was learning a new system, I dunno.
