What are you talking about?
No one in Toronto is claiming this guy is more than he is.
That Ive heard anyway. - Fakepartofme
Seriously?
The crap I've heard from all tons of media here in the T dot make him sound like he's a "vital piece; one you can't let get away".
While no one has come out and called him a perennial all-star, it's a tad weird to see a filler D-man like Fraser get so much lauding and so much coverage lately.
Then again, it's Toronto... |

this one does seem like it could have been avoided...
Gunnarson on other hand would have gotten an award above $3.5M, so that they could walk away from (though no Gunnarson next year would be bad IMO, would have solved the cap issue) - Big_Lightnin
the Gunnarsson deal is standard. sometimes people forget what the average NHL salary is. Gunnarsson is not going to be making a ton more than that. if you can get 22 solid minute from a dman making just over $3 million, that's a fair contract. |

ok, i got that part. but then, the Leafs could have still made another offer no? just saying that if they expected the guy to sign a 2-way deal, they were nuts, because as dime-a-dozen as he is, he proved last year that he could be an effective third-pairing guy, and that's easily worthy of a one-way deal. - DoubleDown
And you're saying they haven't? |

Should have let Bozo walk a kept Grabo. Buy out Liles. - Iggysbff
That would cause a big problem with the coach, and likely hurt Phillip's feelings. |

Meh.
I dont see it as a very bad move.
His defensive game is overrated, his play is inconsistant and his offence sucks.
I have no issues getting rid of him. - Fakepartofme
no it isn't, not it isn't, and his offense was fine when he was on Kadri's line.

the offer was made, because they had to or he became a UFA, and now they can sort or work out something and make another offer, this just bought more negotiation time |

Stanley Cup contenders might have players like Gunnar, but they're playing much less than 22 mns per game. |

Sure you're not confusing him with Franson? |

oh I have no issue with his contract... as I said he would have gotten much more in Arbitration... probably $4M. He's still underpaid at $3.1M as far as I'm concerned and that's great.
comment was just that they would have had the option to walk away which would have created room to sign Franson... but it would also make the D core significantly worse. |

11.18 Ordinary Course Buy-Outs Outside the Regular Period.
Clubs shall have the right to exercise Ordinary Course Buy-Outs outside the regular period for Ordinary Course Buy-Outs in accordance with Paragraph 13(c)(ii) of the SPC. Each Club shall be limited to no more than three (3) such Buy-Outs outside the regular period over the term of this Agreement pursuant to Paragraph 13 of the SPC. However, in the event that a Club has only one salary arbitration hearing pursuant to Section 12.3(a) in a given League Year, such Club shall not be entitled to exercise such an Ordinary Course Buy-Out outside the regular period. Moreover, a Club shall not be entitled to exercise an Ordinary Course Buy-Out outside the regular period for: (i) any Player who was not on the Club's Reserve List as of the most recent Trade Deadline, or (ii) any Player with an Averaged Amount less than $2,750,000. The dollar amount of $2,750,000 set forth in this Section 11.18 shall be increased on an annual basis at the same percentage rate of annual increase as the Average League Salary, with the first such increase occurring based upon a comparison of the 2014/15 Average League Salary to the 2013/14 Average League Salary. By way of example, if the Average League Salary for the 2014/15 League Year has increased by ten (10) percent from the Average League Salary for the 2013/14 League Year, then the figure of $2,750,000 stated in Section 11.18, shall be increased by ten (10) percent to $3,025,000.
Guess we're not buying out Liles if I'm reading this right. Any (frank)ing lawyers on here that can read this poop? |

ok so even 18-19 mins. point is, you want competent defencemen who don't run around their zone and poop themselves when they're not playing the other team's plugs, you gotta pay for them. i know nothing about Gunnarsson, just going by what i hear on this thread and the consensus is that he's a solid, unflashy second pairing guy. sounds like a Josh Gorges. who makes almost $4 million on a 6-year deal. |

If Leafs have a D where Gunnarson is the #4, that will be a pretty solid D core. (meaning they have 3 guys better and more reliable than him).
