Considering the buyout numbers for Liles I would think that trading him while retaining $1M per year in salary wouldn't be impossible. Less penalty over a shorter period of time.
Assuming he can't be traded outright. |

The Leafs do not have the compliance buyout option available to them after using their allotted two on Mike Komisarek and Grabovski and there is no window available for a regular buyout until next summer, but the Leafs can retain salary on one more traded player this season.
or am I the only one who read thewhole blog? - PinkSock
there is a window after arbitration for teams involved with arbitration, but dunno if ALL teams with arb awards get that window.
not a lot of info. somebody posted and article from Larry Brooks last blog, but it wasn't clear on it either. |

I didn't say they can't move him, just that they can't take back a player that will play on the roster.
If they can't make a trade where they retain some salary but don't take a "roster" contract back in return, then they likely have to buy him out... if they get the option.
still trying to find if they will get that option - I don't know if everybody who gets a forced arb award gets a buyout period.
here's Liles buyout cap hit if they were to do it...
2013-14: $875,000
◦2014-15: $875,000
◦2015-16: $2,375,000
◦2016-17: $1,250,000
◦2017-18: $1,250,000
◦2018-19: $1,250,000 - Big_Lightnin
I thought that the 2 buyouts did not count against the cap? |

Fraser is a good bottom pair guy, can play a decent shut down role, but let's not pretend he's the second coming of Scott Stevens.
If he is not a Leaf next year, it's because Franson cost the team more than expected to resign, which is fine, as Franson has not only a decent defensive acumen and good size, he's also a serious threat on the power play.
But, as always, the Toronto media turns Cory Sarich into Adam Foote... - OzBolts
What are you talking about?
No one in Toronto is claiming this guy is more than he is.
That Ive heard anyway. |

Can't let them walk anymore, have to sign them to whatever the Arbitrator awards.
I also believe that the Arbitrator can't come up with their own number anymore either. They have to pick one of the two's amounts. So If they don't settle on a contract before tomorrow, Fraser is either an angry Leaf at 825,000, or a overpaid Leaf with no D partner at 2 mil. - vermie22
Only if its over $3M per...anything less they can walk. |

best I could find
A player can only be subjected to a team-elected arbitration one time in his career, while a player may elect arbitration as many times as possible, provided that a qualifying offer has been made. After a qualifying offer is made, an eligible player can elect to go through the arbitration process, where the team and the player each make an argument for a certain contract size. An independent arbiter hears the arguments and decides on a fair contract amount. If the player has elected arbitration, and the award is more than $3,500,000 (from 2005-2012, the threshold was $1,042,173), a team has 48 hours to "walk away" from the arbitration award, making the player an unrestricted free agent. If the team has elected arbitration, the arbitrator's award is binding regardless of the amount. |

Meh.
I dont see it as a very bad move.
His defensive game is overrated, his play is inconsistant and his offence sucks.
I have no issues getting rid of him. |

We did it to keep Phil happy. - senstroll
BINGO. Would you rather have Phil as a top 10 scorer for years to come and Bozak over Grabo. Or would you rather have Grabo over Bozak and Phil taking a hometown discount to play with Wild after this season? |

Only if we can move Phaneuf for a #1 Center does it make any sense. We are thin on centers with skill as it is. And then it probably doesnt make sense
Example
Sean Coutourier and Seth jones vs Phaneuf, Kadri and Rielly

one thing i don't get is... why did the Leafs not offer him a one-way deal from the start? guy played 45 games last year on D. seems like he earned a one-way deal at the very least. $2 million is obviously crazy but the Leaf offer seems a bit insulting. |

And I'm saying that there is a non-compliance buyout window after the arbitration period is over for teams that went through an arbitration; it begins end of August/early September. |
