Kadri isn't ready to play 1st line minutes... Bozak has chemistry with Kessel, Grabovski doesn't and Grabo wasn't willing to play a checking role....
Where does that leave the team? - Mr_Smokey
You will have to explain what you mean "chemistry" between Bozak and Kessel. How that translates success on the ice.

Can't let them walk anymore, have to sign them to whatever the Arbitrator awards.
I also believe that the Arbitrator can't come up with their own number anymore either. They have to pick one of the two's amounts. So If they don't settle on a contract before tomorrow, Fraser is either an angry Leaf at 825,000, or a overpaid Leaf with no D partner at 2 mil. - vermie22
he's not likely playing with Franson next year no matter what happens. |

So if Komisarek was not bought out, couldnt we have just placed him in the minors to circumvent the cap hit????? If so, JML should have been bought out. |

would only have saved $950k of his $4.5M hit.
They could also put Liles in minors to save the same $950k, making his hit about $2.9M
trading him and retaining salary is the most likely scenario.
If they had complianced Liles, and done a regular buyout on Komi, the cap hit would be:
2013-14: $2,166,667
◦2014-15: $1,166,667
a regular buyout on Liles would save more on the cap next season than if they had done this.

I think JML gets moved with a couple of the farm kids for someone we can use.. just my gut. |

this.
if they want to say it improved the chances of Kessel signing long term at a reasonable rate ($8M per), fine.
but the stats clearly show Bozak is a passenger at best, and both players are better when separated. |

I just don't know why anyone would make that trade. And Leafs don't have the cap for "someone we can use."
"someone we can use" has to have a $1M or less cap hit, and if he's more useful than Liles, not sure another GM is giving him up.
Best case is Leafs retain $1M of Liles salary, and take back another $900k contract they can stick in the minors (saving the trading team nearly $2M) and maybe a 3rd round pick.... maybe.

Seems maybe but the reality is very different.
That is Phil's sister in the stands in the blue top. She and Phil have been fighting and Bozie intervened before they got into a fight cause he knoew Amanda would lay him out. That's what BFF's do. |

I think it depends on number of arb awards, etc. I thought there had to be 2. Not certain they get 1 just because they had an arb award... - Big_Lightnin
I spent a painful night going through the buyout sections of the new CBA and didn't see anything with regards to a limit on non-compliant buyouts (well, there was some crazy high number that we'd never reach, but can't recall what it was over a 10 year period).
There is a secondary buyout period that begins after arbitration ends; think it's Sept 2nd. |

The Leafs do not have the compliance buyout option available to them after using their allotted two on Mike Komisarek and Grabovski and there is no window available for a regular buyout until next summer, but the Leafs can retain salary on one more traded player this season.

I completely agree.
If it were true, Bozak should be getting more points.
But he doesn't.
He's a horrible signing.

they will just trade liles and retain some of his cap hit..not that hard, plus once Brennan and Holzer (I think) are in the AHL that clears up a few more bucks.. |

I didn't say they can't move him, just that they can't take back a player that will play on the roster.
If they can't make a trade where they retain some salary but don't take a "roster" contract back in return, then they likely have to buy him out... if they get the option.
still trying to find if they will get that option - I don't know if everybody who gets a forced arb award gets a buyout period.
here's Liles buyout cap hit if they were to do it...
2013-14: $875,000
◦2014-15: $875,000
◦2015-16: $2,375,000
◦2016-17: $1,250,000
◦2017-18: $1,250,000
◦2018-19: $1,250,000

Or they could do this trade from trade wars
Offer #2 – The Nashville Predators offer defenseman Seth Jones to the Toronto Maple Leafs for center Nazem Kadri plus defenseman Morgan Rielly.

Fraser is a good bottom pair guy, can play a decent shut down role, but let's not pretend he's the second coming of Scott Stevens.
If he is not a Leaf next year, it's because Franson cost the team more than expected to resign, which is fine, as Franson has not only a decent defensive acumen and good size, he's also a serious threat on the power play.
But, as always, the Toronto media turns Cory Sarich into Adam Foote... |

Ya exactly.
People are forgetting about this.
This would clear another 1.7 million or so. |
