He's a RFA, no arbitration, and the Leafs control his rights for 2 more years. Franson doesn't get to make the Leafs do anything.

My guess, if all this 5 milly stuff is true, is that Rielly gets a nice long look at camp and through the first month. Gardiner, Phaneuf, maybe Rielly - it's not like the Leafs are desperate for offensive dmen with questionable defensive abilities.

That one hurts for the Jets, I liked Burmistrov, he sounded like he was a good kid too. Family is from Winnnipeg and there is countless stories of him playing on the outdoor rinks in the neighbourhood that he lived in, and always let little kids join him on the ice for a pick up game.

5 milly is the average over 7 years. He had 2 years of RFA so they paid a premium to lock him up for 5 UFA years. That means he's a 6 or 7 milly guy in the last handful of years and a 3 or 4 milly guy in the first couple.

Franson on long term might be worth 4.5ish; mid term 3.5-4.0ish; short term 3.0ish.

The Leafs can only give him the short term deal. If Franson can't get a long term deal a 1 year deal wouldn't be a bad option for him. Perform well this year and get paid big next summer.

It comes with being rushed, then being sat, then being double sat despite producing more in 5 minutes less than a useless Jokinen. It's a shame, the kid was a master penalty killer in the OHL and was great in his own zone, but that didn't mean he was ready for the show at 18
