Why not?
MTL has two NHL D-men signed past next season and that is assuming Subban re-signs. Why wouldn't they have an interest in Edler?
Feel free to counter - IanEsplen
I'm guessing because Max Pac is the only Hab forward over 5'4". |

Wait, are people on here really arguing that Bieksa is better than Phaneuf? Or are you just saying, for the asking price/cap hit you'd rather have Bieksa? - jmatchett383
They are saying Phaneuf wouldnt make the canucks top 4 and bieksa is better regardless of cap hit or trade value. |

I'm not saying there wouldn't be interest in Edler, he's a fine D-Man and could be a pretty lethal combo with Subban on the powerplay.
But I don't think you trade a 25-35 goal young powerforward with a 4.25M per year cap hit for the next 5 years for a player like Edler. Not to mention Pacioretty is 3 year younger.
And I'm not too worried about Subban resigning, he's still an RFA, so is Emelin and young players like Tinordi and Beaulieu might just be able to fill in some spots in 2 years. |

He had Komisarek, whom Markov thrived with.
He had Beauchemin, whom Niedermayer thrived with.
Phaneuf is a disaster in his own end. He was on for every Bruins goal in game 7. He's dumb as a rock, and has ZERO hockey sense. I wouldn't want him on my team EVER. - Scooby_Doo
whooaaa there...Komi was good BECAUSE of Markov, not the other way around and he turned into a female dog after Lucic beat him up twice
Beauchemin was terrible with the Leafs but good point, did forget about him but again...do you really think Nieds was good because of Beauch?
And Phaneuf was on for every Bruins goal because he was probably playing the toughest/most minutes
The guy just needs a change of scenery, a good surrounding cast and a good partner to take some weight off his shoulders (think Markov 5 years ago) |

Someone explain this to me. Why as canucks fans can we not see the stats for what they are. leafs let in 25 more goals than the nucks over an 82 game season (13 goals over 48 games). Thats not a big difference. We all agree that Schnieds and Lu are much better than Reimer and Scrivens so the difference in the goals could be attributed to the Goalies. If its to the D being so strong then the goalies are equal. We cant have it both ways. - Bluechip23
Stats aside, Bieksa is a good teammate, Phaneuf is not.
+/- is a telling stat, and ask any Leafs fan... Reimer/Svrivens > Luongo/Schneider |

I actually wouldn't mind Phaneuf. But the big thing I cant stand about him is there probably isn't a player in the league at picking and choosing his fights. He loves to pick fights with guys he should beat easily but plays the captain card anytime someone who could take him or would be an interesting match challenges him. I don't know you can call it smart but I just don't like it but other then that I don't mind him at all if the price wasn't sky high I wouldn't mind him on the Devils to learn how to really hit from Stevens |

What is that based on? Phaneuf is a much better offensive player. He's younger. He hits more. He blocks more shots. He skates more ice time. Phaneuf's stats are on teams that either don't make the playoffs or get bounced in the first round while Bieksa has played primarily on powerhouse Cauck squads.
I just don't see what Bieksa brings that Phaneuf doesn't, aside from trade value and cap hit. |

Im sure the Habs are interested in Edler but not for MaxPac.
Beaulieu and Tinordi are both almost ready and will be both very good.
Also Max > Edler, anyone who has size and can score 35 goals playing with Desharnais and Cole is very special and you hold on to him. |

If the Leafs do not keep Phaneuf, wouldn't mind the Habs try and get him for a little less than what he's making right now. |

In the past 3 years, Phaneuf has had 5 fights. 3 of them were against Hartnell, Clarkson, and Ladd. Not exactly the easiest guys to handle.
Bieksa, on the other hand, has had 9 fights the last 3 years. Mayers and Brouwer are the only 2 I'd consider a true match for him, and Brouwer's a stretch. |

Ask them. Not me. I would take Phaneuf easily over Bieksa if they were paid the same. At almost a 2mill difference I take bieksa for sure. |

Dion will get traded before the season starts is my guess. I can see him going to Carolina or Edmonton. |

Exactly, I can get down with that. I just don't see what Bieksa brings to offset Phaneuf's advantages when asset management is removed. |

We arent talking about who is a good teammate. The juice is a fan favorite and a team favorite. Everyone knows Dion is a tool. I am not talking about what leaf fans think of our goalie situation. The general consensus is that the Lu/CS is heads and shoulders better than Reim/Scriv. SO if thats the case the leaf d must be pretty close to the nuck d just based on the stats of goals allowed. Which at the end of the day is all that counts. Leafs sucked in Shots allowed as well which is a telling stat. Nucks were middle of the road in that category. I just think its such a homer comment to say that Dion sucks and wouldnt make our top 5. |

Pacioretty for Edler??? No way the Habs do this, Pacioretty gives them size and was almost a point per game player for the Habs this season. Plus Markov and Subban can do what Edler does, not that Edler sucks at hockey or anything. |

Better defensively how? Does he hit more? Does he block more shots? Is it quantifiable any way?
Meaner, fine, I guess his snarl is fine.
As for leader/teammate, I don't have regular access into the locker room of either team so I can't say. |

He is a UFA according to capgeek.
After next year, MTL's D is looking like Subban, Georges and the kids. I like the Canadiens young D as well, but they are going to need another older D, that can play 20-25 minutes if they want to compete. |

You're probably right, unless Markov comes back which isn't impossible really.
That doesn't mean they should trade Pacioretty for Edler.
The way I see it, after next year it will be:
Edit: Looks like you're right about Emelin, can't see why we shouldn't be able to keep him.... hopefully we do. |
