No surprise from me really. The Flyers aren't exactly goalie experts. After all, they dealt the Vezina winner away. Who does that? - IanEsplen
The Canucks might have just done it. |

Yes, the question was asked what I thought Tanev was asking for... so I speculated. Remember Derek Roy wanting 6m per on a long term deal... - Scooby_Doo
Nick Kypreos @RealKyper 5m
#Leafs Gunnarsson agrees to terms with Toronto on a 3 year 9.45M deal. 2.850. 3.150 and 3.450m in year 3.

They didn't try to trade him for 13 months, they tried to move their other goaltender in a very public way for 13 months. - Marshalle
They might have been trying to move Luongo, but they definitely listened to offers for Schneider too. He might not have been willing to accept any of them, but he had a very good idea of what the market for each of them was. |

you have no idea what the canucks asked for though. granted, we know he went for the 9th overall, but the asking price to philly could have been wildly different. |

So in all that b**lpoop from last year you though the Canucks brass handled it properly? Nevermind then, have a good day. |

As Philly didn't have a top 10 pick it probably was quite a bit different. You're right, they probably wanted Couturier or Schenn. But guess what, goalie is the most important position on the team. Without good goaltending it's difficult to even make the playoffs. Schneider would have solidified that for the next 8+ years. You also could have tried making a package deal for Edler and Schneider. With your assets I'm surprised they couldn't make something work.
Hell, I'm surprised you guys didn't go after Luongo. He might be signed for the next 9 years, but he'll play well for the next 5 or 6 and then if there are any recapture penalties (which I doubt there will be) they're very minimal to the team that acquires him, and likely for only 3 years. |

Did I say they handled it properly? I said their hands were tied as he wouldn't accept a trade to anywhere but Florida last summer when they apparently had an offer on the table from the Leafs. They didn't receive a single offer after the new CBA came out that didn't require them to eat some of his salary and cap hit.
The biggest mistake Gillis made was not educating Luongo better on the market last summer. Luongo needed to be made very aware of the fact there was no interest from either Florida team and that there wouldn't be interest from them. Or course, with his ego he still might not have believed them.
What exactly do you think they should have done differently??? |

We really have no idea they even talked. Teams and individuals leak crap all the time for their own purposes. Seems realistic , sure, but we don't know. |

where is your proof behind that? a hot goalie at the right time in the playoffs is the most important position on a team. the elite of the elite can usually carry a team to a cup, but past that, you can win with any goalie as long as they arent terrible. |

they came within 2 games of winning a cup with michael leighton and brian boucher. you know why? the 2 goalies got hot for a large stretch of the playoffs. and then leighton remembered who he was in the finals. |

But in all seriousness, that's just dumb. When was the last team to win without very good goaltending in the playoffs??? |

most teams that win the cup get very good goaltending. but that very good goaltending isnt necessarily coming from a "great" goalie. its coming from a goalie who plays very well for 2 months. |

Exactly, they got hot and played very well. During the playoffs they were very good. Your goaltending doesn't have to be great all season long, but they have to be very good, if not great, during the playoffs. What is so hard to understand about that??? |

i never once said you can have bad goaltending in the playoffs and win. you dont comprehend very well. any goalie can get hot and play well for 2 months and win a cup. any great goalie can have a bad series and lose in the first round. you dont need a great goaltender to win. you need a great goaltender at the right time. i agree its the most important position for winning, but you dont need to have the greatest goalie to win. |

So they shouldn't have signed Schneider and just let him sign an offer sheet and walk? That's how they mishandled the situation? By retaining their asset??? |

They should have dealt with it more quietly.... Pretty hard though when they sit there starting goalie in the playoffs. ( and he is signed for 100 years)
Edit.... Would you have just bit the bullet and kept luongo in net against the Kings? |

You said "you can win with any goalie as long as they arent terrible."
You don't read so good cause I never claimed that you said you can with with "bad goaltending." I never said you need the greatest goalie either. All I said was that the "goalie is the most important position on the team" and that "without good goaltending it's difficult to even make the playoffs" let alone win in them.
If you have a mediocre goalie who gets hot at the right time and plays very well in the playoffs then you have a shot to win in the playoffs because you got good goaltending when you needed it. |

But it's still very good goaltending that they received at the right time. I never said anything to contradict this. |
