It's less about the player's ability/health and more about the 10% drop in the ceiling and the fact that Mez's salary outpaces his cap-hit by almost 40%. Big-budget teams don't have the space to take him on, and low-budget teams are looking for salary-relief for taking on a big cap-hit.

Just throwing this out there to hear some legitimate responses but, what about a trade for Phaneuf? We probably have the assets (one or more defenseman need to be moved and possibly Read)? His style would maybe bring a little more stability to the Flyer's questionable D.

I would be ok with getting Phaneuf, but the cap would be difficult to manage. I think you would have to trade both Coburn and Meszaros to fit him and get under the cap.

Did you watch him in the Playoffs? Im not saying he is a terrible player.. actually, he is a very good, very rare, d-man. He is not elite, but he is above average, and to have the ability to be a 40+ point d-man, and play the physical game he plays... its something else.

However, he does routinely put himself out of position.

His style would bring less stability, IMO.

He is a very agressive guy.. Big hitter, big shot, but with his high reward comes even bigger risks. He is constantly sacrificing position for body contact (see games 7 of playoffs), and when it doesnt go his way.. the results are ugly.

We traded Versteeg (i believe) 2 days after he had surgery to repair a sports hernia.

My thoughts there are that it's very probable that one of Mez or Coburn are gone in a salary dump(for practically nothing) deal anyway. Why not trade both of them for an upgrade?

id almost be willing to eat some of that contract just to get under the cap until prongers contract can be moved to ltir. I really really dont want to trade coburn....

Injured guys do get traded. When the Flyers acquired Alexandre Daigle, they traded an injured Vinny Prospal to get him. When LA acquired Colin Fraser a couple/few years ago, he was injured at the time. When the Flyers traded Kris Versteeg to Florida, he had just had sport hernia surgery and wasn't fully cleared.

He just didn't play enough last year, when he played I thought he was very good with the occasional "young" mistake, but the only way I see those getting ironed out is just him playing. I didn't really understand why he didn't play every game last year. He was very very good I thought in the semifinals against you guys in 2012, I never understood why he didn't play agains the Rangers or Kings either...

Also with Kovy gone he's sure to get a good amount of PP time which I think will be very good for him.

hes an easy candidate for a conditional trade. x number of games played = x round pick. if he gets hurt, he goes on LTIR and the team gets the cap space back and loses nothing. if he stays healthy, you get a relative steal. and its only this year. win for everyone.
