He is going to cost too much either as a trade (getting under the cap, giving the Leafs what they need player wise etc) or as a free agent, probably 7 mil+. Not for a guy whom is not going to make our team better. IMO of course.

$7M for a top-pairing dman, who plays 25+ mins a night in all situations, who's among the league's top point producers from the blueline, and still smack dab in the middle of his prime?

If anything should be worth $7M+ to the Flyers right now, I would say that is.

Do we need him since we are getting Shea Weber, Alex Pietrangelo, Bobby Ryan, Seth Jones, and Chris Gratton?

Agreed. He's a good player, but I don't see him fitting in here with what we're doing.

Edit: For the price. If he could be had for $3M and we only had to trade a 7th rounder for him, then yes.

- jmatchett383

Yes if he was making less i wouldn't be against it. But he is being paid like a no doubt #1 elite defenseman, one that will be looking for a raise at the end of the year. He is good, but not good enough to justify what it would cost to get him. If we had the cap room available i would probably have a different opinion as well.

Im curious, if Nichushkin was still available to us at 11, would we have passed on him and still drafted Morin ?

I doubt it. I think we would have taken Nichushkin. That's my personal opinion. And either Schenn/Couts and Read would be someplace else for a young d-man.
But that's all mere speculation.

You can bookmark my post, i will and do admit when i am wrong. For example i hated the Pronger trade at the time, mostly because of the picks, I hate trading picks. On a related note I hope the Flyers don't trade picks away in the year they are hosting the Draft.

Probably.

It's interesting that even when there wasn't a shred of doubt over whether he would come over/sign, a lot of teams that needed scoring still chose to pass on him.

What if they trade the pick the day of the draft? Like NJ did.

I bet they would have been able to trade down a bit. Some team would have wanted to jump up to grab him

I still hate the Pronger trade.

I've always been against moving prospects or picks unless they bring in similarly young/valuable assets in return.

Signing Phaneuf as a UFA, as a bridge to Hagg/Morin/etc, I wouldn't mind.

I think Phaneuf would get a big deal. 5/6 years maybe.

If it had won them a Cup, would you still hate it?

I don't care what the Flyers have to do, short of dressing a team full of Sean Avery's, to win a Cup. If they win a Cup during my lifetime, then all of the moves they've made leading to that Cup were the right ones.

I don't consider him a true #1. I think he needs an + defensive shutdown player with him in order to cover for his defensive lapses. He doesn't just put himself out of positions for hits, he is below average in defensive zone positioning in general. Living where i do I watch every friggin Leaf game, have no choice really. Leaf fans would be split pretty much down the middle if you ask them if he is worth the cash, or if he should be their Captain.

You are going to have to pay him as one of the top 5 Defenders in the NHL. Not worth it.

OK then i guess that is the end of our conversation. A bridge, a max deal as a bridge, good plan. He is getting a $45mil+ contract, probably closer to $50 case i don't see him taking less than he is already making.

Had the Flyers won the Cup in 2010 the Pronger trade would surely been worth paying the price. Of course they didn't win, and he suffered a career ending injury which has caused the Flyers to essentially chase their tails since.

So is there a definitive list out there of hockey gods?
Cuz I want to know which one to talk to for specific situations.

I agree. He's a good player. But he is not a #1 defenseman in terms of being a shutdown defender. He's not a liability back there. But with the Flyers having Streit in the mix. Phaneuf is not the type of player, I'd be looking to add.
