They've only showed me that they will continue to gorge themselves in free agency to win a cup, which has been close but no cigar over the years.
- JoeRussomanno

They're "gorging" themselves in free agency?

The added a second line center for a good price, a good puck moving defenseman at market value and a solid goalie who is trying to prove he's a number one. They didn't overpay for anyone, they didn't make any shortsighted trades and they didn't go chasing after guys that don't fill some sort of need.

I think they have the money to sign Gagne. I just don't think they want to right now. I think they've let Gagne know that they're looking into other things. And need to keep some flexibility in case something comes up. And that if they determine that they aren't going to make any other moves, they'll sign Gagne.
- MJL

Probably that, too.

Have we traded for BOB RYAN FIST yet?
- jmatchett383

Yes. He struggled in his first press conference and was immediately sent to the Phantoms.

I have a feeling they are working with Read on a deal. If that falls through they will trade him and sign Gagne.

It's pretty quiet on the Pens board right now. Nothing going on.

What can I say about our free agent signings? Scuderi was a solid move. Hated to lose Cooke though..

It's not just wing it and hope. It's pretty clear that they have identified a young core, and are building around it. One minute you're saying you want them to be patient and stick with the youth. And then you're unhappy that they locked up their young franchise Center to a long term deal.
- MJL

Is he a franchise center and if so is he worth 8 years at mil a year with an NMC? These things seldom work out for the best with this team

I'm interested in your moves next year. Scuderi was a very good signing. He is just what you guys needed. Hated it.

If you trade Read, try to package him with one of the bad contracts. Maybe send Meszaros with him.

They over paid for everyone but emery who isn't more than a stop gap.

I think he is a franchise center. In 5 years, this contract will look great compared to others. The cap went down this year and look what these slightly above average players got.

this whole thing is really starting to stink, we couldn't take any salary back either besides ap for what we traded, just cannot see how it would get done
- mydoglicks

If we traded Schenn and Coburn that is $7.65 MM. That puts them up against the cap. Any more (Read, Couts, whomever is over. ) yes I know they get 10%. But we really need a trade vs. the OS cuz we can't take back salary without giving it.

You know what? We are better defensively now. For sure... BUT we didn't sign any "sexy" name and it's boring really.

We don't need to. Someone would take Mez for 4M. He only has one year left on his deal. We won't get much more than a 4th or 5th back for him.

He's going to be ready for opening night.

I would like to keep Read if at all possible.

Not that I disagree to a certain point but what upgrades could they make without overpaying for better players or trading the young core?

I think your defense has much better depth now. Depres will be better and Scuderi will be solid.

You're whole season depends on Fleury and Crosby and Malkin committing to playing good two-way hockey once the playoffs roll around.

I think he's a franchise Center. So let's look at a few things. Let's suppose that instead of signing Giroux to this 8 year deal, they instead signed him to a one year extension, at say 6M. Giroux will be 27 after the 14/15 Season. So he goes into that off season, as a UFA. And he goes out on the market and team's bid on him to set the market price for him. What do you think it would cost the Flyers then, to sign him to a long term extension?

In light of the other deals that got signed this summer, I think the Streit and Vinny cap-hits actually came away as being reasonable... they definitely didn't turn out to be the same aggressive, preempt-the-market, overpayment that we saw with Bryz.

With that said, I personally would have liked them to largely ignore UFA altogether and give the young core another year to grow together without meddling with the mix too much... while saving long-term cap-space to really make a run at potential UFA's in 2014 or to take advantage of cap-strapped teams in the future to get extra value out of a trade.

Scuderi is 34 and has a salary of 3.3/season.

Coburn is 28 = 4.5/season
Streit is 35 = 5.25/season
Meszaros is 27 = 4/season
Grossman is 28 = 3.5/season
Luke Schenn is 23 = 3.6/season

The pens picked up a damn good d-man, who even though may be a little bit older, signed for a great dollar amount. Always loved Scuderi.

Re-signing Read to an extension wouldn't affect this years cap. So that wouldn't affect having cap space for Gagne this upcoming Season.

Trade him for a defenseman or goalie and continue drafting quality forwards. Cap money spent on necessity not overvalued luxury.
