Rick Smith...the latest Nostradamus... Said that the Isles, Flames, Oilers, and Flyers were in on AP. and they wanted 2 top 6 and a pick/prospect. How on earth do they fit that now with Roy signed?
- section32

this whole thing is really starting to stink, we couldn't take any salary back either besides ap for what we traded, just cannot see how it would get done

I think OEL deal may take a couple ufa years. I think it was 6 years. How close is Pietrangelo to ufa?
- PhillySportsGuy

it's after age 26 right? So he's a 3 years away i believe.

Are you counting the full Cap hit for B Schenn and Couturier here?
- MJL

Yeah, even calculated by hand to make sure that CapGeek was doing the job correctly.

The one caveat is that I pro-rated the 2-way players by games played instead of total days spent w/ the Flyers (too lazy), which definitely under-represented some of the cap hits for guys like Gus and McGinn that spent some time on IR.

Flyers have at most ~$2.8M to spend, probably a little bit less.

Feeding it all back into the current discussion... not going to be possible to O.S. anybody right now, much less Alex freakin' Pietrangelo.

I don't think the unrestricted rules for free agency has changed from the last CBA. I believe it is 10 years of accrued service or at least 27 years old. I'm sure MJL could answer this question for us.

You're premise is correct. But Schenn and Couturier are two way players.

7 Accrued Seasons or 27 years of age.

By the way, if you click on archives at the top on the Flyers cap page. It will tell you exactly what each 2 way player cost the Flyers on the Cap last year.

They spent the entire season in the NHL, though, right?

Yes, they did. But this is what I'm not clear on. Both Schenn and Couturier cost the Flyers less then 1M each on the cap last year. So what counts in the Off Season, the full hit, or what it cost them on the cap past year. Similar to any other 2 way player. It's not clear as far as bonus money is concerned.

It would be a lot easier if the Flyers weren't forced to go through the charade of placing Pronger on LTIR every year.

It was my understanding that all bonuses count in full toward the off-season cap -- in-season, the cushion comes into effect.

Not sure if that's changed in the new CBA or not.

I agree, the guy cannot physically play, I cannot believe the league does not allow the flyers to barry the contract, just because its a 35+ contract, stupid

I guess they could throw schenn and cooter to ahl till first game, that would give us almosr 7 mil I think

They've only showed me that they will continue to gorge themselves in free agency to win a cup, which has been close but no cigar over the years.
- JoeRussomanno

They aren't close to a cup, but if they stick with these young guys I think in 3-5 yrs, maybe. Giroux is a key piece for them, and I'm OK they locked him up. Should they have diked around trying to get a partial NTC like the Pens did with Letang? I don't think that would have helped.

I do think they will be better this season then last, although that is not saying a lot.

A full rebuild where they are a lottery team for multiple years in a row just is not part of their DNA.

As long as they keep holding their draft picks, and only make hockey trades
(JvR for L Schenn is a good example) and don't deal away their young core for aging and overpriced vets they will be OK. Or at least that is how I choose to think about it.

There's a bonus cushion, so there's no worry about Schenn or Couturier's bonuses killing them right now

If you read the off season Cap rules on Capgeek, it doesn't state that. But you could very well be right about that.

But either way, as you stated, the Flyers don't have the cap space to OS Pietrangelo.

It really has nothing to do with it being a 35+ contract.

Would kind of explain why they would cite lack of current cap space as the reason why they can't officially work out a deal w/ Gagne even though they've agreed on $.

I dont know how that would work.

I feel like by the end of Prongers contract, we will all be capologists

I think they have the money to sign Gagne. I just don't think they want to right now. I think they've let Gagne know that they're looking into other things. And need to keep some flexibility in case something comes up. And that if they determine that they aren't going to make any other moves, they'll sign Gagne.
