Not possible. The Blues and Flyers both need to clear salary. Neither team would want to take on more in a trade.

Very True...I cant believe the Blues are that close to the cap ceiling

They are probably tired of losing to the Kings every season in the playoffs.

Yeah, I forgot him...he might not get $5mm, but he's going to get at least $3.5-$4mm.

I didn't realize he made $3mm last year. The Blues went from budget team to cap team fast.

I thought they were looking to get rid of Perron. Considering OEL got 6 yrs and $5.5 million/yr, I have to figure Alex P has no interest in taking a dime less. It is going to be an interesting negotiation. I have to believe they would trade Jay Bo first to meet Alex P's demands before trading him in any blockbuster.

Aren't they only at$7.5 MM available now that they signed Roy? I think we can just OS AP now and they would have to she'd to match.
- section32

They can go up to $6.43mil over the cap during the offseason, that's what makes it tricky.

This is very interesting, and I think a team could take advantage of this. Here's a really high risk theoretical for you.
1.Wait for STL to resign Jake Allen. If they can't get the ball rolling, simply make him an offer sheet of $994,433. Worst case is the team gets Jake Allen and the team gives up no picks.
2. Offer Chris Stewart an offer sheet. He was their leading scorer last year, and they can't just let him walk. It can't be something ridiculous that they wouldn't match, but it needs to be as high as possible as to eat their cap. Let's say 5.5 mil. This is risky as if they do let him walk, then the team would owe STL our 1st, 2nd and 3rd next year.
3. If they match Stewart and Allen, then they should have $1,355,567 in cap space.
4. This would leave them vulnerable. If an offer sheet was made to Pietrangelo for $7,785,568 cap hit or above, then STL would go over the 10% cap they are allowed during the offseason, and Pietrangelo would be free and gone. (I believe? Or can they match and pay the penalty of going over?)

I know this is a pretty crazy master plan, but it was fun to think up Obviously there are a lot of variables that could change, or points that could go wrong, but if a creative GM wanted to try to get Pietrangelo, and give up no roster players doing it, then this is one angle to try to look at it from.

We would be the most hated team in the league...oh wait after Weber we probably already are

Problem is I really dont want Stewart and they know what we want so they could let Stewart walk just to screw with us...not to mention the compensation

Homer would have to be the smoothest guy alive for St Louis to not see what he was trying do after offer sheeting Stewart

Haha ya that's why it's ultra high-risk.

OEL signed his deal during his first rfa year. That lowered the overall cap hit. It would be like the Flyers signing Schenn or Coots long term after this season. It will keep the cap hit down long term.

Like you have stated to me many times. The Flyers are going to spend to the cap. I like what they have done this offseason, much better than last year.
- stveshdy

really that's only because what they tried to do, didn't work. If they had gotten Weber, obviously that would be a different story.

You have a point about lecalvier and briere. I thought they were doing a rebuild in 08 then another one in 11. Now it's just wing it and hope
- JoeRussomanno

It's not just wing it and hope. It's pretty clear that they have identified a young core, and are building around it. One minute you're saying you want them to be patient and stick with the youth. And then you're unhappy that they locked up their young franchise Center to a long term deal.

Weber!?!?! What will it take to get him?!?!?! Read, Coburn, Mez and 2nd round pick in 2037 draft.

And to make matters worse, we still didn't get him. So we are criminals all the same.

I think the Flyers are very player friendly. Any rfa can say "We've been talking with the Flyers." and the team will need to take them seriously.

It doesn't mean you overpay to keep him. Obviously I'm in the minority here but so were people who said the earth was round 500 years ago.
- JoeRussomanno

They didn't overpay him Joe. If anything, as the contract years go on, he'll be underpaid.

I believe the OEL contract runs right up until his first year of UFA eligibility. I think essentially it is his "bridge contract" to FA. Also, Stamkos signed a similar deal. I wonder if Alex P's reps are interested in a contract that would eat up some UFA years, which would increase his yearly average on salary?

Rick Smith...the latest Nostradamus... Said that the Isles, Flames, Oilers, and Flyers were in on AP. and they wanted 2 top 6 and a pick/prospect. How on earth do they fit that now with Roy signed?

Ya but that doesn't force their hand, making an offer sheet that pushes them over the 10% offseason cushion forces their hand. Bringing them slightly over the cap just makes them trade a minor player or dump some salary. Forcing their hand doesn't give them a choice.

I think OEL deal may take a couple ufa years. I think it was 6 years. How close is Pietrangelo to ufa?

They got hosed on the Giroux deal but that's ok we have 8 years to worship an above average player.

Lavi's system tends to help out player's scoring numbers too, that's a double edged sword. I'm not undervaluing anything, people act like he's up there with Crosby and that's just not the case.
- JoeRussomanno

I haven't read anyone state that he's up there with Crosby. And he's not paid as much as Crosby is. In an earlier post you called Giroux an above average player. I have the utmost respect for you Joe, but that's just not accurate.

Who do you think is a better player? Giroux or Parise?
