Stepan 80pt pace, top 4 PK, top 3 2way defensive forward, top scorer, top Center, and u think he will sign for less than Cally did 4 years ago when Cally was a 50pt player?? You need to understand how contracts work in the NHL, it's about comparables. Find any player 70-80pts and plays in all situations and centers top line that signs for less than 5M

I used Claude Giroux's 2nd nhl contract of 3.75 AAV. Is Claude Giroux not a comparable, fine. How bout Joe Pavelski his 2nd nhl contract was 4 million annually on the nose. How bout Plekanec, his 2nd contract was 1 year deal worth 2.75 million. I live on capgeek. All 3 guys are comparables.

I am baffled at what huge uproar this has caused...like there was not a chance in hell we was gonna come back. It's over and done with I think Sather must have something up his sleeve. He's gotta she'd salary somehow..what about a Staal+Pyatt+Fast+4th for 5th overall and McBain

take out the 4th rounder and replace it with a 1st rounder in next year's draft and then maybe, maybe the Canes accept.

You gotta include a 1st rounder in next years draft.

Multiple sources have said the asking prices for draft picks are astronomical.

I meant to put next years first rounder in there my bad. I think we have a bit of an advantage though with Staal and Carolina showing they want to unite all of them.

Crazy the Rangers don't have 1 forward making under 1 million. Hell even the healthy scratch Powe will be taking over a mill off the cap by just sitting in the press box
- TPC

Our problem is we have been constantly drafting players from the US developmental league, going into college. Unlike the Hawks, who have been drafting NHL ready players... they might be a little raw and unpolished, but they had the size and skating to be effective. Just look at Andrew Shaw and Brandon Saad.

Those are older deals and my problem with Giroux is his was signed early on during his breakout campaign. The previous season he had 47 points in 82 games and was a -9. The Flyers took a chance at signing him to that deal and he rewarded that faith. Step is in a better position coming off the near-point-per-game pace he recorded this season, albeit in an abbreviated campaign.

I did a post on another website and I though David Krejci was the closest comparable. They have the same career scoring rates (Krejci - 0.66, Step - 0.66) through the expiration of their ELC's and in the season before their new contract Step posted a rate of 0.92, Krejci, 0.89. Krejci received a three year, $11.25MM contract. Given inflation I could see Step asking for $4MM or more. I'm afraid O'Reilly and his ridiculous contract (thanks Feaster) is really going to skew the process though.

Plus more of the patented push or hug to the players that go near the Rangers crease instead of mashing them

That's an AAV of 3.75 million, just like Giroux. Duchence's 2nd pro contract was 3.5 million. Zajac's 2nd nhl contract was 3.88 million. So anywhere from 3.5 to 4 million for Stepan sounds logical to me. Call me crazy.

This team has to get tougher and bigger somehow. Clowe at a discount would be ideal but if it can't happen they have to figure out a way to clear some space, like ship out Pyatt, Boyle, Powe etc for draft picks.

Odd you say that since you are talking up guys like Miller, Fast and Miller. The way many think on this thread there isn't much of any kind of problem with the drafting and developing done by the Rangers. To me the Rangers have a philosophy and it's hard to argue with the success they've had.

Right. Put it this way, after all of the research I put into it I still figured Step is going to ask for $4.5MM and we'll see where he settles. Maybe he gets $3.75 but don't be surprised if it is a bit higher.

I think the Rangers are going to resign Clowe or someone similar. It won't be that hard to clear a couple million in space. And again, I still believe a Staal move is a real possibility.

Where are they though? What have the Rangers done to facilitate their growth and injecting some youth into the line up? Not much, matter of fact, they sign and trade for older players in the positions these kids would play.

What do you think, Staal in a deal for the 5th pick? Or the Staal for Skinner deal?

Seemed like a no brainer to buyout richards especially given the contracts needed to be given out

We are guilty of it a little of it as fans. For instance, Miller and Kreider are physical kids but they are never mentioned as potential solutions to that problem. Always need to overpay for some brute from outside if the organization that inevitably ends up on the 4th line.

I tend to be an optimist but counting on Fast or Lindberg to contribute in a big way this year is past optimistic. Look, the Rangers have gotten a lot of production from their drafted players. Just in the last couple of years we've seen Hagelin, Kreider and Miller brought into the lineup. All three of those players were drafted since 2007. Roman Horak was cashed in to get Erixon who subsequently was a piece that helped get Nash. Ethan Werek in 2009 turned into Lindberg. Our first rounder in 2007 sadly passed away unexpectedly. The 2006 #1 busted out (it happens). Just because the Rangers aren't counting on integrating young players this coming season doesn't mean they won't do it or that they don't have players ready to do it.
