Jan Levine: Rangers RFA Salary Projection Weekend
Lots of projected salaries, what say you? - airjan23
, Excellent review and prediction post Jan.
I'm squarely in the no Zuccs corner. The club just cannot afford Hagelin and Zuccs in the top 6, and if your going to play Zuccs on the 3rd or 4th line, he's not worth it. It really doesn't matter that he showed a willingness to go to the dirty areas, he didn't do much once he got there, ok off the rush he's ok, but just take a look at the Boston series, he wound up on the 4th line and we all know what happened there. I don't get this fascination with Zuccs, well, there is always the shootouts I guess. |

I think everyone's guess is in range that you mentioned. I say 6 yrs 30 mil for McD. 5 yrs 22 mil for Step, 2 yrs 3.5 mil for Hags and 2 yrs 2.5 mil for Zucc. |

We need size. Zucc is the exact opposite of that |

All reports from norway seem to indicate that a zuccarello extension is imminent for 3ish years in length. They say it's extremely cap friendly tho. |

I am with you when it comes to getting more size and toughness. Probably the Rangers biggest need of the offseason besides another skilled guy for the top 6 IMO. But, if you can lock Zucc up for a million or a little over I think you have to do it. The guy has skill and for a million bucks I think can definitely pot at least 10 goals or more, that's a good return on a low salary like that. Plus he was one of the few Rangers who did go in dirty areas. |

Not thrilled, but what can you do. Just hate seeing a valuable roster spot taken up by a 5'6 player. It's not the money I care about either, it means another smaller player gets a regular shift. Just don't like it |

Yeaaaa but we can always trade him or scratch him. Not sure av will play a physical, bruising system so big physical guys might not help.
At best, he has a breakout season and nets 20 on the second line. At worst, he's another option for av when injuries strike or a trade piece. |

Zuccs is tougher than his frame indicates, I understand your calling out for more size but to me they lost to the Bruins b/c they lacked execution on the PP and thy are not as skilled. Not re-signing Zuccs in favor of a bigger but less skilled player goes against what the Rangers are trying to do which is to match up against the other top teams from a skill standpoint....in my humble opinion of course. |

Which is incredibly important which will mean he will be an easy player to trade if we do decide to trade him. |

If we were to sign...
McDonagh, 4.85m AAV
Stepan, 4.25m AAV
Hagelin, 1.85m AAV
MZA, 1.25m AAV
We would be left with $1,955,833 in cap space to get a deal done with Clowe. I know I heard that Pyatt had 2 very good years with AV in VAN, but if we want to keep the size, we might have to find a way to move Pyatt. |

The guy is a good hockey player. He finished second on the team in points during this playoff season, averaging about 16 minutes of ice per game. There is more to the game than just size, plently more. And, Zucc would be a steal for anything less than $1.5 million, especially because it would give the Rangers an asset that they can move in a subsequent deal. Just not signing him, and letting him walk as a RFA would be stupid, and not a good use of organizational assets. If you don't see him in the long-term plans, than you can move him down the road. |

If Richards gets bought out, I would like to see Lindberg step up into that 3rd line center spot and maybe Miller on the 3rd line RW spot... we would be a little over filled with players then. |

Assuming Lindberg is nhl ready, I agree. Lindberg is a beast on faceoffs apparently. |

From what I read hes a really good two way pure C with some good playmaking upside.
He was playoff MVP in the SEL last year, thats not bad at all. We could use some of that big time playoff ability here. |

Not against Boston, he was overmatched big time. Hey, if you want to sign him because he's good in the shootouts, fine. |

Malkin... 0G 0A -5 vs. Boston
Crosby... 0G 0A -3 vs. Boston
MZA... 0G 2A +0 vs. Boston
Im not saying MZA is better than Malkin or Crosby, but BOS was shutting down even the 2 players regarded as the best in the world.

Lemme throw out a hypothetical...
Lets say Rangers win, Hank wins the Conn Smythe... but Richards has a PPG effort in playoffs...
What do you say then? |

How many times do you think the 1992-1993 season was brought up during that conversation? Messier: Look, these people wanted to run me out of town on a rail as well. Just go win the Cup and everything will be fine.
Edit: Wow, I didn't even catch the part about Richards reportedly telling his caddy that he isn't goint to be bought out. I wonder how credible the caddy is? |

He only had 1 goal vs the caps tho. I don't think anyone is saying zucc isn't a good player, I just think his regular shift compromises the teams ability to wear down teams. We already lack that, we have not one forward who can wear down the other team. You can say Callahan or hagelin if you want, but because of size and doing that they each now have a torn labrum to show for it. It's a job for bigger players and the same results next year are likely with the same roster makeup. Even the series we are winning are killing us for the long haul in a potential cup run - Slimtj100
I understand what you are saying. But, I don't think the solution is just not to sign him. If the Rangers can sign him long term for under $1.5 million a year, he will outperform his contract. So, as far as organizational asset management goes, unless the Rangers intend to give him a no-trade clause, which they won't, if you just let an RFA walk, you'll get nothing for him. Whereas if you sign him, especially a talented player on a bargain basement contract, you can eventually get something back for him (maybe something even good back for him), if you want to rework the roster. Remember, not every move designed on making the Rangers more playoff ready needs to happen this summer. They can happen in-season as well. |
