So, for example, at the 2006 draft, the Flyers who had centers Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Peter Forsberg, and RJ Umberger on their roster, should have passed on yet another center at #22 named Claude Giroux and selected either the best defenseman available at that slot - Dennis Persson, or perhaps Ivan Vishnevsky? Or maybe a goaltender - Semen Varlamov or Leland Irving?

How many of us would be upset now at that decision?

Perfect example! Well done.

Well.. at the time Giroux was a right winger... but I agree.

You're correct, he was listed as a RW at the draft, but ty for understanding my point.

The Flyer scouts can pick the future top line forwards out of a Canadian Delievery room. " 6 pounds eight ounces, eh? How's his Skating?"

Unless Monahan, Nichushkin or Lindholm drop, I'd be might upset if they didn't have one of Nurse, Pulock, Ristolainen.

I don't care who they get with the first pick but I don't want them to trade down and I don't want them to take Max Domi.

Edit: Sorry Max Domi fan.

In this example Giroux was drafted as a Right Wing, when they were very shallow at the wing position. Their defense wasn't a major need then. But of course there are examples that would fit both sides of the arguement.

I agree about Max Domi... no thank you, I'll pass.

Let me say this though. From reports I read Monohan is a defensive responcible forward with offensive upside. I would not mind if they got someone with explosive scoring threat like Nisko. That is a need, but a defensive center with upside is not what we need.

If it was 4 years ago I'd want them to be all over it. Then again, he wouldn't be available. Right now I'd feel like we were moving sideways.

It might be a sideways move in some ways. I'd have to know what the cost is. If the cost is low, and I thought that he could provide the same level of play as Bryzgalov. Then I trade for him, providing the cost is acceptable. Buyout Bryzgalov and Briere. Miller's Cap hit is higher then Bryzgalov's. But it only has one more year left.

Not especially. He's a very good goalie when focused, but he seems to be able to be taken off his game way too easily at times.

From what I've read there's every reason to wait and see if they buy him out. I'd be loathe to move anything for him. I may even ask them to eat some money on that last year of his deal.

If you have a guy at the top of your draft board, and it's a clear cut gap between him and the next guy, why even consider position? Especially if you're picking in the top 10 or 15, get the best player available.

Also, the Flyers don't have much depth anywhere in the system. They could trade Schenn or Couturier at the draft and then that vaunted depth is gone.

If we're talking a trade for Miller, then my interest drops to absolute zero. If he's a CBO, then I'd have mild interest.

I guess it would depend on what position he played in Juniors. Hockey Futures had Giroux listed as a Center.

Why? He's a talented kid who could just need a change of scenery. Maybe he'd enjoy playing someplace where there are parks

Talented forward, with attitude problems.

Sub par defensively.

I was joking, remember Bryz didn't want to go to the 'Peg because of the lack of parks?

Yeah, but only if he is really just pretending to be Russian.

Not sure I see a fit, TBH.

Haha thats what he said yes.

Weird because the parks are probably one of the few good things here.

That and a 30 minute drive from the city, and you are in the middle of the wilderness for camping.

Inconsistent effort. Talented. Questions with maturity and dedication. Already questions in his defensive game.

Classic "new nhl" Philadelphia Flyer forward.
