True. I'm just not crazy about having a 4 million dollar cap hit sit in the press box. Although, it would just be for this year.

I have a minor issue with it, but I'd work guys in and out of the lineup, for sure. There's also the possibility he gets hurt-or somebody else does-and they need to shuffle things.

I would rather keep this years 1st. If good 2-ways are so hard to get, why isn't pulock expected to get picked top 5, being the second best projected 2 way dman in this draft?
- JAKEw1234

I have a habit of ignoring those who simply ask questions and give nothing else

Haha but as far as I know with Pulock its because for all of his offensive potential, his defensive game might hurt him in the NHL.

Actually in terms of physical play, Edler and Giordano are very similar. Edler is easily the better PP point man and much better offensively. And fairly equal defensively. Edler is the better player.
- MJL

And Edler would be an upgrade. Would Giordano really be an upgrade to anything we already have?

See exactly my thing I think it's much closer than MJL thinks in terms of trade value. Players like Simmonds are exactly what they need. What the Flyers need is for the defenseman to stay healthy and play the game they are capable of playing. Does Edler help, certainly, but I think Simmonds fills a bigger role for them.
- GirouxForTheShow

There's other ways for Vancouver to get that type of player then to trade a top defenseman. I think they'd be foolish to make that trade. And I look at overall value of the position.
It's a no brainer to choose Edler over Simmonds. It would not even be close in terms of who would fill the bigger role. A top minute all around, all situations defenseman is a much bigger role then a 15 minute a night Winger.

I'll put it this way.

Grossman upon his arrival, and basically his whole time here has been the team's best D-man in his own end the majority of the time. I think a lot of this fan base has come to overrate this defensive core, and so has Holmgren.

Giordano is better than a lot of what the Flyers have. I'd slot him after Timonen and Schenn, although his game is quite different when compared to Luke.

Yes, absolutely to the latter question.

That's what I mean, though. I'd rather have it be Hartnell + 2nds and 3rds for Ed than Ed + 2nd and 3rds for Simmonds, and Hartnell still fills all of their wants.
- JAKEw1234

The only issue with the Hartnell proposal is that the Canucks need to get younger and clear some cap space so moving Edler for Hartnell doesn't make a ton of sense from that perspective. However a guy like Simmonds does. Canucks traded their 2nd this year for Roy. I doubt Gillis would trade Edler and picks for Simmonds though.

Gillis would be a fool to trade Edler for Simmonds at all. No knock on Simmonds.

Giordano is pretty solid, I'd prefer Edler because of his size and because still has upside left if he can bring it every night(Rick Bowness was in charge of the D here and he's a bad coach0. I doubt Giordano would be very cheap to acquire though, he's pretty valuable to Calgary with J-Bo gone so I'm guessing Calgary would need a nice offer to move him since I've never heard any rumours of him being potentially available.

I don't think the fan base overrates the defense at all. Neither does Holmgren. He knows what he needs. This fanbase has spent how much time criticizing Coburn, Carle, Meszaros who's made of glass. The fanbase and Holmgren both know what's needed. So that statement is false in my opinion.

Well obviously those trade proposals from fans aren't overly realistic, they're unintentionally biased, just like mine and others. I guess the only real way to know what a fair trade would be would be to wait and see if a trade like that actually happens, and then trust in the judgement of our GM that it was fair.

Interesting. I haven't watched Simmonds play at all since he got traded. In LA he looked like a nice 3rd liner, I assumed that he's improved in Philly and established himself as a top 6 forward. I'm assuming he's similar to a guy like David Clarkson? Good physical goal scorer, but needs good linemates and not much of a playmaker? He could be great with the Sedins, but would not a good fit with Kesler at all who needs a playmaking winger.

I think Gillis would be making a big mistake if he turned down Simmonds + pick(s) for Edler. A lot of Cnucks fans consider that a fair deal straight up with no picks involved but I don't watch Simmonds enough to comment on it.

Simmonds is a very competitive, tough hard nosed player. Not a ton of puck skills. But get's his nose dirty, and scores his share of gritty goals. He will fight and stand up for teammates. But as you said, very little playmaking skills, and lacking in the defensive side of the game. Good around the net and along the wall. The type of player every team needs. But not worth giving up a top defenseman for in my opinion.

Just from an outsider, if I was Gillis I would simply make a run at Clarkson. That D is a real strength imo, and it would be dumb to deal Edler. Really interesting to me that its being considered.
Thought he was untouchable for the most part.

Cool!

He's good around the net and making plays in tight. Not much of a puck carrier or playmaker. He'll get his share of assists by making the simple plays.
