So take out Vanek's +46 one season and you get a minus player, Nash does much more than Vanek - sbroads24
they get paid to put up points, they do it equally as well. |

Thomas Vanek would not have come close to doing what Rick Nash did in Columbus playing with the players Rick Nash played with.
People complain about Vanek playing with Roy, Pominville, Stafford, Briere, and Drury... I would love to see him play with Zherdev, Umberger, Brassard, Vyborny, Vermette.
What did Nash do when he played on a good Rangers team this year? Oh he was a plus player? That completely surprises me.
What was Vanek's plus/minus when he was on a non-playoff Sabres team? Oh he was a minus player? That completely surprises me. - theblueandgold
Vanek would have been a -27 with Columbus and a +16 with the Rangers the same way Nash has been. Again, it's a bad contract no doubt but I think he's played well especially in comparison to what some other players are being payed. Even if the Sabres had given him a more reasonable deal when his contract was up, what did you think was going to happen? The moment he hit free agency again he'd take one look at Gaborik's contract and say I'll take that one darcy! |

And one player does is consistently and the other does it for a few games at a time, Vanek goes scoreless in 42% of games played, that's awful for your best player |

Vans a great goal scorer. BUT how many are goals where HE shot the puck vs deflecting or tapping a rebound. I would Love to have a natural goal scorer. To many dirty goals . Seems ruff preached that all the time . "need to score goals from the dirty places"
I want a player that can shoot from top of the faceoff circle and score. Vanek can be that type of player from the slot . |

I'd tell you whose fault that is but it would just remind me of how he's staying on for one more year and now I'm going to start crying |

We don't have anyone that can do what Vanek does in the dirty areas. Once we get that player who can do that Vanek can play in the slot |

While I like Nash, I don't like him at 7.8 mil.
That's 1.8 to much.
Anything over 6 mil per and you should be top 3 at that position. - dadeadhead
It seems that supply and demand automatically forces teams to pay players 15-20% more than they are worth. Polarizing the fans and forcing teams to trade them. |

I think the days of Detroit winning playoff rounds are over... St Louis is overrated and I could see the Washington/NYR go either way. |

I'd trade Vanek for a player like Hossa, Kovalchuk, Stamkos, Nash who score their goals in skill ways rather than deflections and greasy rebounds like Vanek. |

it makes no difference if you get a point a game for 82 straight games or 2 points a game for 41 games and get blanked the 41.

It matters. Take the end of the season a few years ago when Vanek ended up with 28 goals. He had a brutal year, we were eliminated from the playoffs. He ended the year by scoring 4 of the 28 goals in the last meaningless game against Ottawa. He needs to be there more between games 35-75 not just the first 20 and the last 20 |

Vanek can do both... Problem is he is out in the dirty areas to often because he is the only player on the team that can actually produce well in those areas.
Vanek is underrated offensively but overrated overall if that makes sense |

so now he isn't skilled?
Have you seen his shootout goals? Van scores plenty of filthy goals, I'd rather have a guy who can score any way. Great deke, great shot or dirty goals. |

I don't hate Vanek. He is one of the more skilled players in the league. When he is hot he is better than most players in the league, its the games he's not that are a problem. There are way too many "cold streaks" for him |
