all 1st overall picks... same amount of hall of famers as guys who never played an NHL game

Having the number 1 pick and choosing a d-man is the furthest thing from a lock.

Most of the same people who think that Jones is the savior for the Organization, will be the same ones who complain that he's a bust when he has the expected struggles of a young defenseman.

Matt Read or Scott Laughton plus the Flyers pick, isn't going to get you the top pick.

what do you think would? It's more likely that team just uses the pick and the last time a really high first round pick was traded, I think was the Spezza pick. Personally I don't think we know what it would take to acquire the first round pick. I think trade in the NHL are very unpredictable.

It would cost you at least one of B Schenn and Couturier. Along with other prospects/ and or picks.

And cry when he's traded and blossoms elsewhere.

So Laughton doesn't have the same value being a young former first rounder the the names you bring up? I can see why that is but I ask you why not?

Laughton was a later first round pick. Schenn was the 5th overall pick. And Couturier was the 8th pick who at one time was considered a possible first overall pick. They are much higher rated players then Laughton is.

The Jets know they cannot attract many FA's.

Would you be comfortable dealing one of Coots or the 1st rounder this year? I dont think Brayden Schenn gets it done on his own.

- flyer_nutter

Well, I'm not sure about the deal I'd do for him...you have to give to get. I have said I'd trade Coots for Yandle straight up...for Buff, well...at first thought, I wouldn't want to, but have to consider it if that's what it took...but if it's Coots, I'm not adding in other players like Read or prospects like Cousins or Laughton or this yrs 1st rd pick...maybe a 3rd rounder or something like that...I personally rank Schenn similarly to Coots right now, so, same goes for him.

Laughton's stock should have risen since being drafted as he surpassed point per game production this season and had almost 2 pts per game in the playoffs. I don't think his value among those in the know would too far behind Schenn and Coots at this point, but it is behind nonetheless.

There are many examples of goalies, forwards and D who busted in the first round. Obviously, there will be "mistakes" made, pretty much every round, every year. I think it has more to do with the competency of each team's GM/staff and scouting team than it does exact draft position. If you look back a few years or more versus the ISS rankings for that year, you'll see it is no exact science and the rankers often had it wrong. So, aside from a few notable exceptions, most of the picks outside the top few are made as educated guesses.

The Flyers have not been the best evaluators of defensive prospects but I don't think that should preclude them from picking a defenseman in the first round if they think that highly of him. Personally, I think it's ok to address an organizational need (lack of top offensive-defenseman prospects in the system and players on the NHL club) so long as the "reach" isn't too far.

I could see the Flyers taking a Monahan or Lindholm if they fall to them, another skilled two-way center with decent size would probably be too much for the Flyers to resist (they love those types)...but I think it's ok to take a guy like Pulock there as an alternative, given the relative glut of such types in the org. I know people like to assume the Flyers can simply trade assets for the D man/men they need, but the premium on the type of player they lack is steep. I know a guy like Pulock or Nurse would likely take at least another season or two to make the jump to the NHL but the team has a young core and certain players are on the outs by/after next season such as Timonen and probably Mez....so, they can afford to be a little patient. Now, if Pulock and Nurse are gone by 11, then I'd certainly go with a Monahan or Lindholm (if there) rather than reach down for a Morrissey or Hagg...just my personal take at this point.

He was obviously faking to avoid being traded. Never mind that he has a NMC.

It is every year. And it is always past the TDL. And then he redeems himself in the playoffs.

It shouldn't be taken lightly. I'd be making more changes than Holmgren seems to be contemplating. I would have fired the coach already, and I'd be looking at more than just the defense, which seems to be their primary focus this summer.

I wish the new CBA had a mandatory percentage of HB fodder that had to be followed by the GM.

Yep, he fakes an injury every year so he's not traded at the TDL. Are you aware of what a No Move Clause is?
