It's a justification for poop teams to feel better about their lack of talent that can't get the job done most nights.

So what you are saying is that the Sens beat the Leafs on the weekend, because I got so excited when the Leafs clinched the playoffs.

The term "direct" is important here, since a team could be +30 in Corsi collectively, but because of bad luck, be behind in the shot count.

(frank)ing luck. Always luck.

When you do something consistently, it can only be explained by luck. For example, I would hit the gym, but I dont think im lucky enough to get fit.

Only if it is the Habs, Sens, or Bruins. We have no chance against the good teams.

Yeah that will be awesome two original six teams, I think the winner goes to the conference finals.

When did not being skilled enough to shoot and hit the net become unlucky, and being skilled enough to shoot and score become luck?

Is it surprising that Corsi Buffalo's goalie coach never won anything, never even got to a final?

OK, we got the rust game out of the way. That was a no hitter, if I ever saw one, tonight. They just wanted to get out of that game, with no injuries. They best get the Florida game in the bank, so the Islanders don't catch them. I have a feeling that the Jets will smoke the Habs, because they still have two targets to go after. That'll make Saturday Night, game 1 of a possible 8 game series. There will be some messages sent, in that match.

Posted this on the other thread after the new blog went up.

----------

It seems to me that advanced stats took off after "Moneyball" became popular.

If there's one sport where these stats *might* work, it's baseball. You have one hitter against one pitcher, and each man has a whole host of averages that describe his career/season.

The reason it comes close to working in baseball is because every play is clearly broken down to its smallest possible form. You can isolate, identify, and tinker with enough of the variables to give you an idea of how things will go.

The second you get into any sport with continuous play like hockey or even football, you have thousands (if not millions) of tiny variables.

These kind of stats may have some limited use in hockey assuming you could ever perfect them (HUGE assumption), but they'll never be as important as the raw numbers.

- Leeman4Gilmour

I'd go a step further and say that the raw numbers aren't half as important as watching the player/line/team play.

leafs will beat montreal but will lose if they face the caps in first round opponent.

they should not hope for home ice. it's enough pressure.

i hope they make it to the finals and get blown out by luongo and the canucks. that would make it all worthwhile for lu. imagine the lu to toronto rumours after that happens. nonis will finally throw in gardiner as long as lu brings the cup to toronto so they can have a parade for making it to the finals.

The couve won't get out of the first round.

10 mil in goalies with a 63 million cap hit, with only 15 players signed and 8 to go, will be interesting.
