That group of 7 on the Flames is getting it done...the Oilers failed miserably to get anything done...therefore, it's leadership.
I've said all along that IT IS SHAWN HORCOFF THAT IS THE F------NG PROBLEM!!! Put your favourite player Iggy on this team instead of Horcoff and the Oilers are competing for the cup right now.

so Gagner is too small so your solution is to draft an 18 year old kid who's 1inch taller to replace him? good plan |

Umm yeah, he was a pretty big part of it. The Oilers didn't just bulldoze their way to finals like the Kings did with their loaded roster. They played a different style each round, employed a different strategy for each opponent. That was not a stacked team by any means. I think anyone who discredits the outstanding work up to and including the 2006 Mac T has done wasn't paying attention. It was clear that he ran his course after that, most coaches do only have a shelf life of 5 or 6 years on a team, not to mention, he had the sh!ttiest of rosters to work with. He is no doubt the 2nd best coach in Oilers history, right behind Slats. Better than Muckler,Green,Low,Lowe and all the rest. - Jeropotato
This. MacT coached a bunch of slugs to 8/9th place for years. This is part of the reason the Oilers are in the shape they are in. You do not improve when you draft in the middle year after year and you cannot attract top end UFA's. See Calgary Flames for more proof. |

Different coach, different style and system, plus its a young inexperienced team growing. Reminds me of the Sens and Habs actually. At this point last year, Toronto was 9th in the conference.
The Corsi stats are measured off shots mostly. Hardly a firm indicator. A quantity over quality, if you will. - Gunslinger
They are 4 points out of 9th. A couple unlucky breaks and they would be on the outside looking in. Fact remains that they are outshot, outpossessed, out chanced virtually every game. If this were a full season where they had to play against the West and travel? It would likely be an entirely different situation.
Enjoy it now because if this is a team they think is good enough, then they will be disappointed next year.
Example: Look at Colorado a few years back. They made the playoffs, the team was young and exciting. The Goalie was standing on his head most nights. They got wins, made the playoffs. Then look at the last couple years since.... |

They are also 4 points out of 2nd in the East, and 4 points out of being top 5 in the league. A couple of lucky breaks or shootouts wins and they would be even better. Facts are not that they are outplayed every night. Just outshot most nights, which means little to nothing. If this were a full season, all teams would have a lot more travel. Not just the Leafs. Every team.
This game has many rules, not just the ones you're playing by. Ill enjoy it now, and ill enjoy your hopes, prayers and wishes that they will disappoint next year.
Example: Look at St.Louis. They made the playoffs last year, young team and exciting. Solid goaltending most nights, stealing games. They got wins, made the playoffs. Then look at them this year. |

Righhhhttt......
Hall will be Captain soon. Horc is not the problem. He's just over paid. And goalie is not the problem. This team cant score more than a goal a game. No goalie will help. Kipper has been poop for 95% of this year.
A couple key moves though is all that is needed. Not trading one of the kids. They are what is working on this team. |

Yes lets look at them...They have been a MAJOR disappointment. Most people chose them to run away with the West. They had to go out and trade picks for help at the deadline just to make a push to get into the playoffs. And this team NEEDS the playoffs to survive financially. Now this summer they will find themselves up against the cap trying to sign their RFA's and fill a roster with low salary guys. Not exactly a model I would point to as being great.

St.Louis took a step back, but are far from a major disappointment. Good try though.
As for your whining about cap this and cap that, Toronto has no cap issues with space to spare to improve. Whether they dominated or not, St.Louis remained a good team despite some growing pains that come with young teams, like Toronto, making that step to playoff contention and competitiveness.
Besides, St.Louis is just one example. In any event, every team is unique and they will all go through their own trials and tribulations. Toronto is a good team, not a great or elite team, and what happens next season is quess work, assumption and wishful thinking at best. |
