I think the drought is finally over...at least in this part of the midwest.

Wet enough for ya?

Orr with bad knees could outskate EVERY single player he played against. One on one coverage, Gretzky would be Pwned by Orr.

I remember seeing a Hockey Night In Canada game with the Bruins and Canadiens, the Bruins got a penalty and off the face off Orr got the puck. He skated into Montreal's zone, around everyone when he got to the net the Hab players he had deked around were all converging on him. Orr skated the puck back to his end then made another rush into Montreal's zone. As he skated around a Hab player hacked his hand and Orr's glove fell off. Orr, still with the puck, skated back to his end with Hab players still hacking at him. Orr circled his own net back into Montreal's zone skated by his glove, picked it up, put it on and contiued to rag the puck and killed the penalty single handed. We're talking about his peers, not him playing against a group of Beer leaguers. Yes Gretzky was great but Orr was hands down the best player this game has seen.

I admire your passion Paul and hey...maybe Orr is/was the best. Thanks for the story.

Goalie pads are WAY bigger now, and overall there are more good tenders around the league (fins, swedes) when comparing eras it beneficial to look at average goals per game league wide and factor that into calculations.

Not just goalie pads: goalies are bigger, and skaters and skaters' pads are not just bigger, but provide more protection - more blocked shots now than there used to be.

When you add 6 teams at once...the quality is highly questionable. When Gretz arrived, 4 teams were considered 'expansion'...but they were already established professional teams. BIG DIFFERENCE.

Orr, in his 2nd NHL season...walked into a league with 6 new teams created from scratch. If anything was 'watered down,' it was the league Orr entered.

And as far as i know...goals/assists/points were kept in EVERY ERA.

Fair points in both directions. Having watched hockey from the late 60's through today, I think Bobby Orr would have had more success and points in the Gretz era and Gretz less success and points in the Orr era given the style of play in the NHL when they played IMO. BOTH however would be the very best at their positions.
