O'rly? I suppose Court Jester is technically a title.

A couple of breaks and this team could easily be a contender next year.

Last night was the first time I really watched Lehner, man he looks solid. Always in the right spot, square to the shot, alert. He looked very robotic out there, like a machine.
- shekkie

bowl-legged as hell, but he definitely looks promising. i wouldn't use last night's game as a real barometer though. flyers were (frank)ing awful. they had 11 shots through almost the first 2 periods. don't know the final count. barely tested him.

Lot of holes to fill, but it is possible. Not sure about contender, but a playoff team.

Right now the goaltending is up in the air, as well as the defense core being in shambles. That is a lot to overcome. The forward core is basically what it is going to be, the lack of goal scoring is a legit concern as well.

All they have to do is become more defensive oriented and most of those issues are solved.

I forgot to add the uncertainty of who the coach will be.

hes arguing with tim p that its easier to replace bryz then 6 dmen, and snider and homer should amnesty him, while timp says they should inprove the d and give it another year.

That sounds like typical nonsense hockeybuzz rhetoric. They need to tear it all down and build around Gervais.

Add some puck moving defenseman and his style of play would be more effective.

I would give Laviolette another year. I don't think he's going to get one though.

Sounds like this has the makings of one of the historical debates of all-time. Up there with Nixon/JFK in 1960, and Douglas/Lincoln 1858.

Hartzell's #'s in the USHL were not very good. McKay's were better.
- bradleyc4

True, but both of them put up pretty amazing numbers this season. Better numbers than all the other goalies in college who are already signed. You'd think someone would take a chance on them.

The Flyers need to figure out a way to stay healthy. Lavi didn't have all is weapons which hurts. The GM's backup plan after missing out on Weber, Suter, and Parise wasnt very good. Tough decisions have to be made.

There was no backup plan. All the eggs were in the Weber basket. When Nashville matched the offer sheet, there was nothing left to do but go shopping at the dollar store.

From a writing standpoint, Les actually preferred covering the Flyers (and got to know the game pretty damn well over the years, especially for a North Carolina native who never watched or covered the sport of hockey until he was assigned to do it). But no one would turn the Eagles beat because it's actually an easier gig -- much, much, much less travel -- and also higher-profile.
- bmeltzer

Oh, great. You'll be ditching us for ThrowballBuzz before long...

My opinion of Les' reporting is due to his doing the same thing in his time covering the Flyers that Tim Panaccio, the Philly.com-affiliated writers, and Courier Post writers are doing now: blame the goalie with no regard for the impotent offense in front of the goalie and subpar defense at both the position and in terms of team play.
