It appears Holmgren has already had discussions with Agent for Mason.
Bottom line: Paycut as per holmgren but also may mean new contract.

- ParentMcleish

Gonna all come down to performance I would imagine. And the question that is begging to be asked: Since there aren't many games left this season, how many starts is Mason going to get? Are the playoffs secondary to evaluating talent?

If they get a new deal worked out and it's a paycut, I could see them keeping both Bryzgalov and Mason.
- Jsaquella

2 or 3 year deal in the $1 to $1.5 range is probably ideal.

I dont see Mason signing for that cheap. I could be wrong but that seems very low.

Not sure how that works with the cap going down and Bryz's salary alone being significant. Bob was making 1.5? 1.8? and people were complaining that was too much for a backup.

It's an odd move from top to bottom.

He might have a choice, he recent seasons might have teams not wanting to commit money to him in that range you mentioned.

Alright, big question:

How did Homer do today?

A
B
C
D
or F

- coffee junkie

D- He picked up a struggling young Goaltender that is going to force us to spend MORE money at a position we are already too expensive at. A goalie who is going to get even less help from his new team than his last.
Positive notes that prevent his grade from being an 'F'. He did NOT trade Coots or Read for crap. There are a few players I would have accepted in return but he did not loss any major assets including our #1 pick. Also he got rid of Leighton, that's nice.
Summary aside from screwing the cap for next year with Mason's contract, Homer did not do anything (else)stupid. It could have been much worse. I would trade for Yandle, I'd even give up Coots, but Read & Coots or Coots & our Number 1 pick would have been too much. So One bad move that doesn't lose us valuables get's my 'D' Rating.

Just heard an interview with Mason, he says his agent told him of Flyers' interest a few days ago, and he's excited for a new chance.

Wouldn't be amazed if they had an idea what they'd offer before hand.

Sounds to me like the Flyers wanted to make sure they had a solid back-up at least. If they can re-sign Mason for $1.5mm or so, Bryzgalov could easily end up staying at least one more year.

24 year old goalie with promise still.

I would think two years at $5M ($4M the cheapest).

Mason's a free agent next year, so the cap isn't messed up at all next year.

Mason is likely to get more help from the Flyers than he did from the Jackets, in terms of coaching. Listening to the interviews, it seems like he got very little support from the Blue Jackets staff.

There's nobody that would give him that as a UFA.

I dont see Mason signing for less than $2.5M per year.

Still a very young goalie.

- stveshdy

Essentially a reclamation project. Tore up his contract after one good year... expectations to great and he wilted under the pressure. Perhaps we could see a more apropos contract (as you suggest) with a goalie time share until he is ready. Perhaps more analogous to Rask/Thomas, whereby Rask has taken the reins and done admirably.

I don't know. Looking at his previous numbers and what he is making thats a significant paycut. The kid still has promise and hes not very old at 24.

I hope I'm wrong and they lock him up for cheap but I have my doubts.

Interesting little conversation between Lisa Hillary and Mr. Snyder who claimed the Breeze signing was Homer's decision, not his. But Mr. Snyder did state he was happy with Homer's decision.

I dont think they traded for Mason and give up a pick with the intention of not signing him. They could of waited until the offseason to go after him.

I'm more confident he signs here than Bryz sticking around.

He's got a save percentage just over .900 and a GAA near 3.00. There's not a lot of teams that will look at that, and what Bobrovsky's done, and jump to give him money, if he was a UFA.

It sure sounds like the Flyers want to get him locked up for a reasonable price and move ahead.

If he signs for a cap hit under $2mm, I think they both do. Neither one of us knows the answer to that now
