Having a collection of good young talent is nothing more than a start. Lots of teams have had that same start, never went anywhere further and then traded that talent away.

So you can't simply point to our young core and assume anything further.

- TheGreat28

Is that what I was stating? Or was I stating in reply to a post that was pretty much saying the Flyers didn't have any young talent? And that the pipeline was dry? I didn't even mention the other assets they have that aren't even on the team yet.

Bryzgalov could be bought out this summer...I see no harm in making a deal to see if Mason can recapture his form.
- Jsaquella

And the goalie carosel continues. Ironic that the flyers trade away bob for no reason and take a risk on another guy.

The flyers have no (frank)ing clue when it comes to goalies.

This deal is a huge risk. I can't see how with the Flyers Cap situation as it is. How taking on this player with a 2.9M Cap hit is a good idea.

Mason is making 3M?
That is a lot for a back up.

Is Bryz gone?

Not sure any of this makes sense right now.

- Marc D

bob was making less than that, and he's better than mason. yep. good plan.

And part of the reason Bobs was traded was because of his high backup salary.

Yikes. Homer and Flyers have entered the Twilight Zone with this trade.

Granted, Bryz could be gone, for whatever reason - I guess the cost and length of contract the Flyers gave to him - and we're right back to unproven/project goalies.

his 2.9 ends this year (2 months) we only pay him like a third of that, then he is a rfa who will take a huge pay cut

Simmonds, Voracek, and Giroux aren't producing?
- MJL

Have you been able to watch any games this year or are you just a box score kinda guy?

I've been seeing a lot of inconsistent and lack of production through out the year from especially ALL 3. Best of those mentioned has been Voracek, even with the enormous amount of turnovers in the offensive zone. Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of Jake, then again I was told I was stupid because I wanted to trade down in 2007 get an asset and draft Voracek. Go figure.

Mason's salary for this year is 3.2 mill. Cap Hit 2.9 mill. That means, to retain his rights, the Flyers need to offer Mason a minimum of 3.2 mill/yr (I think). That's starter money for a guy with a .903 career sv %.

I'm thinking Holmgren traded a 3rd for a playoff rental. Stanley cup here we come :p

The Bryz speculation will abound as soon as the the flyers are eliminated.

The one problem I see Jsaq is this lack of having any kind of proactive plan is slowly consuming assets. They seem to "lose" every trade, even if it is marginal. Like what you were saying with Rosehill. They make a move only to undo it months later (waive Sestito / trade for Rosehill, trade Bob / trade for Mason, etc).

I'm trying to give Homer the benefit of the doubt, and I wasn't in favor of canning him before, but I'm really not seeing much from him these days.

Why would he take a huge paycut? His Q offer alone is going to be equal to what he makes right now.

Not a big deal, Mason's current deal is over after this season and will most likely be signed for much less than his current contract. I don't think that giving Mason a chance to recapture his form is a bad thing and the change of scenery could be all Mason needs to get back to were he was.

It's my guess that Mason will get every opportunity to prove he can regain his rookie form and if he does, that the Flyers will exercise the buyout on Bryzgalov and sign Ray Emery(or similar time splitting type) and go with him and Mason as the goalies next season.

I know you like numbers, obviously not letters. I SAID they don't have the young guns THAT PRODUCE. Yes, the pipeline is DRY. Well not many solid Randy Jones out there.

it ends this summer, he is a rfa, im sure he will get a pay decrease
- mydoglicks

As RFA making 2.9M, to qualify him they have to give him a raise.

Unless they think Mason is a starter that is better then Bryz, the deal is highly questionable to me.

Mason is young, but he's regressed.

Philly's team D is not going to help him get better.

If they re up with Mason and keep Bryz they have like 8M in cap hits for the goalies.

It doesn't make any sense to me.

Only way I can explain this: It buys the Flyers a look-see up close at Steve Mason to see if his problems are fixable therefore, making him a cheaper alternative to Bryzgalov. If they choose to keep Mason as a back up, he would theoretically be cheaper.

That's all I got.
