Given Vanek's age (30?) he will definitely be looking for (potentially) his last contract that offers both money and long term stability before he hangs up the skates. My concern is his peak years are upon us now, and a 7 year contract wouldnt make sense for a player over 30. So if it came to that where another team offered him crazy money and length of contract then we'd have to let him go. Although, any team would have to give up first rounders for that type of contract. Im ballparking a 3 year extension in the 7 mil range per season. I thought he should have been given the "C" when he signed his last big contract after the Drury/Briere mess. He plays in the tough areas and makes his teammates around him better. Still has value here in Buf

That's the problem with this team. Their best player with the most accurate shot shouldn't be getting his ass kicked in front of the net every night.

If we trade him between now and July 1st, the team trading for him can sign him to a max 8yr deal.

Anything after that the max he can get in UFA or with his new team is 7yrs.
