Why would some of you give up on Vanek? Clearly our best player on most nights, and seasons for that matter. I would give him a three year extension and continue looking for the right pieces. With Pegula's money and desire to win a cup, i would say the term "rebuilding" wouldnt be in his vocabulary. Hes got the money to turn around the team now. Other teams have made successful changes in one season so i dont see why everyone is panicking to sell off the whole team. With the right coaching and system in place the Sabres just need to make a few smart moves between now and over the summer to right the ship. - Up2nuthun
Thats the problem he is not going to want a 3 year contract it will be much more than that. |

OK - they guy got it, but nobody else did.
It could be that the guy was born in March, 1965. In which event - if he used his birthday as part of his screen name, it would be
Sabres-365. - Der Kaiser

In Darcys world, I wouldn't ecpect more trades until deadline day so he can maximize the value. Of course, if a team comes in with a hell of a deal (Columbus giving 2 firsts), you pull the trigger! |

What makes you think he will sign a 3 year extension? The guy is in line to get another monster contract after next season. He will get another 7 year deal worth $50MM, are you ready to pay that again? |

When Vaneks contract is up he will be 30-31 years old. This will be his last shot for a long term contract worth a ton of guaranteed money. I doubt Vanek takes anything less than 5 years. Same for Pommer & Miller.
Nobody is giving up on him but the reality is, trade them while they have value before they walk for free after next season.
The only one I can see resigning here would be Pommer but his trade value is too high right now to risk it. This team has to look 3-5 years into the future & those 3 players aren't in those future plans. |

Given Vanek's age (30?) he will definitely be looking for (potentially) his last contract that offers both money and long term stability before he hangs up the skates. My concern is his peak years are upon us now, and a 7 year contract wouldnt make sense for a player over 30. So if it came to that where another team offered him crazy money and length of contract then we'd have to let him go. Although, any team would have to give up first rounders for that type of contract. Im ballparking a 3 year extension in the 7 mil range per season. I thought he should have been given the "C" when he signed his last big contract after the Drury/Briere mess. He plays in the tough areas and makes his teammates around him better. Still has value here in Buf |
