It would have to be a very good deal to trade Coburn in my opinion.
- MJL

Yep, similar to what I'd be asking for if trading Brayden Schenn.

You can't/nor do I want to replace Coburn via free agency. That's a losing strategy.

There might be some i'll trade some of my over priced crap for your over priced crap with pick or two to sweeten the deal if a need is met for both teams....hossa for bryz....or....bryz for mike green.....Washington needs a goalie we need a puck moving dman......these are just examples....don't kill th messenger

I would use him paired with another player to upgrade a d-man.

If we could move him + for a guy like Alex Edler id do it in a heartbeat.

No doubt. Trading a defensman such as Coburn just to trade him isn't a valid reason. If a deal makes the team better, then by all means.

Absolutely not.. but you may be able to upgrade Coburn in a package deal. That would be my strategy if I were going to move him.

Last week on NHL Live EJ Hradek had a top 5 list of buyout candidates.

5. Briere
4. Brad Richards
3. Hossa
2. Luongo
1. Bryzgalov

Those middle three players would all be worth considering signing to short term deals, if the price was right.

- Feanor

Well that is a terrible list...Briere is the only one I would buyout, others are good players that you don't want to buy out and risk losing

Mind you, he is getting lit-up while playing for OKC.

I think they let hovinen go because stolars is ripping up the OHL... 13 and 3 920 save % on par with malcolm subban.

Yup, it is. Finally got to play some actual games in the OHL, as opposed to being sat in the NCAA.

Very good post. Not only is it a fact that we are not contenders or even possibly a go two or three rounds team, it's almost impossible for them to make the playoffs. By the time we play next, vs the Penguins (another probable loss) this will be even more clear. They will be 8-10 pts out of 8th and in 14th spot. Forget it. If they had a chance to make the playoffs in the 6-8 spots, I would be ok with trading maybe a mid round pick for short term D help, or dumping salaries like Briere's. Not as it stands.. Sell sell sell. Gagne, try to unload Briere if he wants to (if not, buyout time), none of the D should be untouchable either at the right price (maybe exclude Timo and Schenn) Coburn, Mesz, Grossmann, all can go at the right price.
- Hextall271

I'd keep Grossmann. He's been fairly good for the most part, and is the type of defensemen most teams want. Keep him part of the mix. It'll pay off if he's healthy.

You don't decimate your team because your not going to make the playoffs. You can't trade pretty much your entire D core because of one bad Season. I'd be looking to trade Briere, and that's pretty much it. Maybe Fedetenko, but you're not going to get a lot for him.
- MJL

Has to be the right deal for sure. Not saying to trade them all, but any should be considered for a high pick or young forward. I also think Bryzgalov should be kept. If they do want to buy him out due to cap.. Do so at the end of next season when there is a Better crop of Ufa tenders

It would have to be a very high pick or a very good young forward. This team should not be having a firesale.

Well my only point is no one back there is untouchable at the right price. For forwards. Giroux and cooter are the only untouchables. Jake would have to be an overpay on a dman. I've loved his progression.

There might not be as many buyouts as everyone thinks....there's going to be some trading of bad contracts for need. And if it doesn't work out you can still buyout up until next year.

Who needs a goalie? What bad contracts do they have? Crap for crap?

I'd take OEL out of that now but the other two for sure.

Nobody wants to take into consideration the cost and difficulty in replacing these players, when you trade them for the right price.

Well no, obviously not. But I don't see us getting deals where moving guys, especially a Grossmann or Mez (even though he's played poorly), will be any better than keeping them. Basically the dig one hole, fill another principle.

That I dont know.. I wasnt suggesting an actual trade, but the basis. I think its gonna be pretty damn hard to move a forward and get a top pairing d-man. To boot, it would likely be one of our top young forwards (couts/schenn) ++..

In my mind a more likely strategy (and less damning to the core) would be to just upgrade one of our current d-men while attempting to keep your core intact.

I can't help but think you could unload Briere for a bag of pucks instead of buying him out.

His cap hit is bad, but for some teams, that's not a worry.

$5 million in actual dollars the next two years.

That's got to be enough of an enticement for a small market team to think that he can bring some playoff-time magic to their club.

The NMC may be a problem, though. Too bad Buffalo is stinking out the Eastern Conference cellar right now; they may have been a good fit.
