Outside Jones it's a guessing game to see if any other D are in the top 10, it's always possible.

Nurse is a distinct probability.

Maybe anything is possible, we know the Flyers aren't scared of taking a player well ahead of where scouting services have a player ranked.

Well, not like Stamkos.

Drouin and MacKinnon are playmakers as much as snipers, Nichushkin, Barkov and Lindholm are all more pass first guys. The top rated guy who is definitely "shoot first" is Adam Erne, and he's not expected to break the top 10 in most mocks.

Nurse has been projected as a top ten in most of the mock drafts I've seen. And there's always that tie-in with Philly that would garner a lot of coverage.

The Jackets are really sitting pretty this draft.

I've seen many too but with any mocks it's a guessing game. The Philly things I know I've mentioned before a few times.

They really are, and if they and the Rangers miss the playoffs, they'll have two lottery picks.

The ones that have Nurse going top 8 seem to be the more recent ones.

Funny that it's looking like the two top defensemen in the NHL draft could be African Americans with famous kin in other sports. It's awesome to see the in-roads hockey has made in the US

Yes it is, I like Nurse and at 8 he's fair game to consider.

Isn't Jones' uncle Donovan McNabb? If this is the case, you know the Flyers somehow get him. I'm salivating thinking of the first comment from Donovan on what he told Seth about the Philly fan base.

Nope, Darnell Nurse is McNabb's nephew. Seth Jones is Popeye Jones' son.

Then Nurse has to be the pick, but I would be estatic if the Flyers get into the top 3.

If guys like B. Schenn and Coots are the future, when does Lava start riding them hard this last 18 games to gain valuable experience and work through their mistakes. Both those guys should be playing over 17 minutes/game, but it just isn't happening. It's not like the seasoned vets amongst the forwards are exactly playing stellar.

I'd like to see Briere sit or dropped to the 3rd line, Couturier bumped to the 2nd line with Schenn & Simmonds and see that line get a pooppot full of ice time.

If they get in the top 3, it'd be awesome

Outside of Seth Jones, there may not be a D who goes in the top 10 this year. So there is definitely a very good chance the "best available player" when the Flyers pick will be a forward. I'd be fine with it, too.
- bmeltzer

Hahahaha bill, really??? There will be at least 3 dmen that go in the 1st 10. Maybe even 4.

Just started checking out the mock drafts. Flyers certainly are in a good spot as of today to pickup a quality D prospect. The lower the finish the better since they can only pick 1 slot lower.

Do rounds 2-7 follow the same order?

Nurse has been climbing as he's really stepped up his offensive production this season versus last which addressed some scouts' concerns. So far things I've read from him and about him depict him as a strong character player/leader who keeps working hard on improving his game and his performance bears that out. I have to admit, I'm developing a bit of a Manboy crush on him. His skating and raw talent at his size (6' 5") is very very attractive. I know BPA is the traditional route, but if the Flyers pick after say, 5th, I wouldn't be unhappy with Nurse.

I'd like to see briere in the press box before the puss gets injured and we can't buy him out. Wouldn't put it past him to stay in Philly with his kids

If they go that route, I don't have a lot of faith in the Flyers' ability to correctly project the best available defenseman nor in their willingness to nurture him through his pro learning curve even if they do select one who proves to be a legit top-pairing player in the NHL down the line.

If they select a D-man, I hope they leave him with his junior team AT LEAST one additional season -- and preferably two -- no matter how "NHL ready" his tools may seem. When he does turn pro, bring along slowly in his responsibilities, letting him grow and mature at his own pace.

- bmeltzer

Good points...I don't have a ton of confidence in the Flyers ability to bring a long a top D prospect, but at some point the culture has to change...Jones would be ideal, but there are some other guys (Nurse) who could also make it hard for them to fail.
