Did the Penguins ever draft a defenseman with their high picks? They are on a similar trajectory as to the Pens. They are only in year three of the rebuild. Remember it took the Penguins 5 years from when they drafted Fleury to make the playoffs. It's been three since they drafted Hall. - Ben37

Whitney was 5th overall. I'd put him in with the rebuild. |

has anyone discussed our need for a 4th liner that even has the possibility of scoring? Our 4th liners are all minus players while the rest of the team are pluses. Id love a jarko ruutu type of 4th liner or a gary roberta. Not scorers but guys that at least have the chance of scoring. |

Yeah I know. He at least was in the middle of the pack. 18th overall is not too shabby. |

To me Bennett looks the most impressive when he is throwing his body around. He has really caught my attention with some physical plays in the corners that have resulted in turnovers and wonderful scoring opportunities. - kill.monsters
He'll be even better when he fills out a bit....remember what a beanpole Malkin looked like his rookie year?

Still a first rounder...that's kind of the definition of "high" isn't it? |

Enlighten me on this one: what did Anaheim get for Justin Schultz being a Richard? |

I would consider Orpik "Middle of the Pack"
High would be 1-5...maybe even a top 10 pick. |

What kind of rules are that? The guy was drafted and simply didn't want to sign with Anaheim and they get shafted? |

According to wiki:
During the last week of May, 2012, Schultz officially "de-registered" from the University of Wisconsin triggering a process that made him an unrestricted free agent (UFA). According to league rules, from the time Anaheim was given notice of the de-registration from school, they had a 30-day exclusive window to try to sign him or trade him. Anaheim was ultimately unable to sign him. On June 30, 2012, Schultz agreed to a two year entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers.
You would think that there would be some sort of compensation pick given to Anaheim. |

Exactly...like a RFA. That really sucks. What was the hold out? He didn't like Anaheim or the team offered him low money? |

He got a very good signing in Edmonton. Hate the attitude though.
Schultz, Justin ยป EL $3,775,000 $3,775,000
Wouldn't want somebody like that on my locker room. |

I agree it sucks, but those were the rules in place. I'd like it better if they got a supplemental pick somehow in the next draft....

He took the same amount Nugent-Hopkins and Yakupov, 1st round picks, took. |

That makes his selection all the better...top pairing physical defender all these years. There were a lot of guys picked ahead of him that were busts...(there isn't a single guy from the 10 picks before him that is an impact player in the league).
Lots of good defenders in that draft though...Volchenkov went after Orpik and Kronwall went later in the round. |

Jonathan Drouin, the No. 3-ranked skater on Central Scouting's list, is riding a remarkable 28-game point streak, during which he's produced 26 goals and 64 points.

penguins need 2-3 under the radar moves.
you will hear for days following the deadline that whomever gets the big names (iginla, etc.) are the clear winners.
the penguins are in a good spot. the offense is right where it needs to be. top 6 looks great. bottom 6 is awful. letang and martin have been great. oprik hasn't been great but is still a top 4. niskanen would be better on the bottom pair but he could work as top 4. love seeing despres play. engelland and eaton have been good, but they will hopefully be watching from the press box come playoff time.
like people said, Iginla would be great, but the asking price will be high plus he would cost the assets that could be hung on to while we trade less valuable assets for more effective returns.
now I think Iginla wont be traded and even if he is, it wont be close to what Flames fans think. Remember with the weeks leading up to the 2008 deadline with Hossa. Atlanta was asking for 2 impact NHL players, a top prospect and a 1st round pick? Now in theory they got close to that but Esposito was nowhere near a top prospect and the 1st round pick was low and Erik and Colby were hardly "impact" players.
People have been talking about Smid. I like the idea. seems like he could fill the void. he gets hits, blocks, and plays around 20-21 minutes a game.
Dallas is another team. I like Morrow. he isn't the player he once was, but he could still add some experience and leadership to the 3rd line.
Also hopeful to get a bigger guy for our 4th line. our 4th line is very undersized and wont intimidate anyone come playoff time.
I have a feeling we will see a Penguins deal before the deadline. |

I'd rather see Shero go after serviceable players for the top-six and defense, than going all-in for Iginla. |
