neither can half the of the current isles; he will fit in great... i would say his defense is average...which is an improvement..once again those flaws are teachable flaws...you can't teach hands or size and he has both

I've said that all along...how can you be -29 and play 8 minutes a game...pretty hard to do...I think if Snow trades a prospect its Nino for the right player.

A couple of rumors:

Marc Bergevin is actively working the phones, trying to improve the Habs despite team being in 1st place. While passing on Jagr during off-season it is said the team is pondering a possible Plekanec-Jagr reunion. With a shorter season, Jagr’s age is less of a deterrent factor and if the price is reasonable, Bergevin will make a pitch. Conversation between Habs and Stars are already on the way. The Habs have also contacted the Oilers in regards to Ryan Whitney, who could give the Habs a hand with the 2nd powerplay waive. Sources in Edmonton say Whitney is very likely to be moved before trade deadline.

Rumors of Streit being shopped are 110% false, source informs me. He has begun negotiations with the Isles and I am advised two sides are fairly close to an extension.

The Sabres are shopping Stafford. Red Wings, Canucks and Kings have all inquired. I am being told LA is ready to make a splash again at this year’s trade deadline day. They do have the authority from the owner to spend to the cap, and I’m being told they target a top 6 forward as well as a solid d-man. Talks ongoing with Sabres for Regehr and Oilers for Smid.

Hawks have contacted CBJ and the Caps in regards to Brassard and Ribeiro. Looking to add even more fire power to an already nearly unbeatable team.

Canucks continue their shopping for a 3rd line center. Talks ongoing with Panthers for Matthias and/or Mueller.

nino has been good the past two weeks...i think he can be successful because he score alot of dirty ugly goals. nelson keeps getting better...his vision and his skating have improved greatly...he still needs to get stronger but he is really progressing nicely
- NYI78

It's amazing what happens when you leave prospects in the minors to develop and don't rush them to the NHL...

I have no problem extending Streit. He's the team captain for a reason. He's bad in his own end, but no worse than half the other options in the organization. He's still got skills in the offensive end. With Vis gone at season's end it's a wise move. 2 yr, $5.5m or 3 yr, $7.5M should get it done.

I have no problem with resigning Streit if he comes at 2.5-$3 mil per season. If the rumors are correct that he's seeking a similar salary to his present contract then I say bon voyage. While Streit is indeed a good puck carrier, he simply lacks in too many categories to be considered a top pairing dman so his tag has to be reduced a bit. In fact, I'd argue he's not even an effective top 4 pairing player on a good team.

In addition, he also would have to give up the Captaincy. This is Tavares' team at this point. When saying he's the Captain for a reason, I'm not so sure just what that reason is. He's not a vocal player by any means and not the type of guy to rally the troops. He's a 'lead by example' player who became a one year all star and thus allowed to become the Captain. I've become concerned that his 'example' hasn't been so good on the ice either as I've seen Streit not give 100% on many occasions.
This team now needs a Captain who can motivate with words as well as actions.

first of all we are not in the locker room so any questions about his leadership are purely conjucture or speculation. second... the players...not the coaches or garth or chuckie voted Streit the captain..also it looks really bad taking away the c of off someones chest when they are still on the team...i know we all want jt to be the captain..but it just looks bad...

I've heard it through more than one article as well as players in interviews that Streit is a quiet player who leads by example. It was even said during our long losing streak last year. There are plenty of guys in the league who are quiet Captains, but I don't think this team needs one.

As for 'removing' the C and it's appearance, I generally agree, which is why I said in a much earlier post that signing Streit may be tough to do based on taht very reason. That said, it's clear that JT is the first and foremost leader on this team. If Streit were truly an all star caliber dman, I'd probably offer less resistance to his being Capt, but he's not even one of the top 2 dmen on a a terrible dman corps.

I agree it looks bad taking the C off but if that's the case then we say goodbye to Streit. This team is Tavares's. the guy leads by example which is exactly what this team needs amongst other things. If snow can't find a replacement for Streit than we need a new GM. The guy is getting up there in age and he really is'nt all that great a player. If that's "leading by example" i don't want any of these developing kids following that example.

Agreed. Better stride too. Still not the best acceleration, but he's not just this slow, off-balance string bean anymore either. Still some work to do, but he's also not the clueless shellshocked Nino that just vacates the puck in the corner that we saw last season. That said, I don't want him up here if the Isles just put him with Reasoner and Aucoin or Joensuu. He can't carry a line like that...he can round out a line that already has some skill and playmaking.

I wanted to also address this one individually. It's not true that teams always vote on their Captaincy. It used to be that way but over the years, more and more teams have had management select their Captain. I tried to research what the case was with Streit's being named Capt but couldn't find anything other then his feeling proud that 'management and players have confidence in him'.
Now I truly am speculating here, but given that Streit's contract being the largest on the team at the time and he was coming off an All Star appearance, I wouldn't be shocked if our notorious micromanger owner made that selection himself with Garth.
I am willing to bet if you had that team vote today, #91 would be selected in a landslide.
