I think these players that think they will get the big contracts like in the previous CBA have a rude awakening heading their way.
- Pierceme69

their yearly money and cap hits will remain similar, the only thing that will change is term.

if anything, i think the cap hits will be higher because the money won't be able to be stretched out over 12 years, and they can't front load deals anymore.

Wasn't meaning as a rental player, I mean in general. This team needs a high profile player but not a rental. I'm not sure I would even want to move those younger players I mentioned for Perry. Yes it sounds great when you say it but if you look at this roster I totally agree with you a rental is not the answer
- Stripes77

The time will come for that big time acquisition. That time will be when Darcy is fired at the end of the year IMO and fresh new eyes can evaluate the situation.

That could drive salaries down marginally.

i replied to you, and somebody else replied to me....that's why i wasn't initially sure who to refer to.

either way, to your points

-Pominville out scored Perry last year perry outscored him the 3 previous years (while winning the hart), and has more points this year

-Pominville has 3 more goals this year despite that, perry still has more points

-Perry plays with better line mates - pommer's linemates are outscoring perry's, not sure how you figure they're better. you don't think vanek and hodgson are as good as getzlaf and ryan, or atleast close. they're outscoring them.....

add to that the fact that perry is 5 years younger.........

if you don't think he's better then fine..........i think most people think he's worth a lot more. which isn't taking anything away from pommer, i think he's a very good player

now i'm done.

- sensarmy_11

Most ppl would say Ryan and Vanek are a wash...
I can't imagine anyone would say Getzlaf isn't better than Hodgson

And my points argument was to show the two produce roughly the same
Yet for some reason,
Perry is a "superstar" and Pominville is a "good player"

I just don't see what makes Perry SIGNIfICANTLY better?
Would I rather have Perry?
Yes
I wasn't saying Pommer is better
Just trying to point out that Pominville is underrated and they aren't actually that far apart
And I'm not going to give up a comparable player (+ who knows what else it would take to actually get Perry)...
For a guy that will likely walk at the end of the season

That would be a horrible idea for any team
I'm sure you wouldn't trade Spezza or Karlson for him

My dream come true!!

I really do miss the old NHL when there were multiple player deals. Like the old Lafontaine trade with the Islanders so many pieces in that deal, back when it was all about hockey

Perry doesn't play with Getz and Ryan. He plays with Etem and Getz. Ryan plays center now

you think?

i was under the impression that the lenght of deals, and the fact that they could be heavily front loaded, is what was keeping cap hits down. players are still gonna want to get paid, and now that teams don't have those "tools" anymore, i'm not sure how they'll keep salaries down.

maybe for the mid-range guys, salaries might go down a bit, but the "big name" guys are still gonna get paid big time......i think

Now that you cant hide a cap hit the players wont be able to "sneak" more money into their deals.

Sabres IMO should be targeting guys that will be ready to make an impact at the time when their future core will be able to make an impact as well. Grigorenko will be a 60-70pt guy hopefully in 2 years, Foligno should be in his prime in 2 years, same with Myers, McNabb, etc. Prepare for 2014-15 and beyond. Were not a cup team with this core.

if we wait till next year than we wont get nearly enough in return

I wouldnt assume leino is bought out

- hubie

Leino better get bought out... Horrible signing!
As far as our "big 3" goes...
My hope is that they'll either be extended this offseason,
Or traded before next season begins so that we can get maximum value for them

And like a few on here have pointed out,
Maybe extending Miller and Pominville at their AGE is a bad idea...
If we can trade them for comparable players that are younger, then that's something we almost have to do IMO
But that also brings us further away from Terry's "sole purpose is to win the cup" talk too

So Richards left practice early and now is questionable for the NYR game tonight, still think he's faking?
- blacksheep1

He left practice because he got an audition on broadway, if might last past the start of the game that's why he's questionable.

first, karlsson is a d-man, and probably the best one in the leauge. that's a silly comparison.

as for spezza.......debatable.....i think spezza is worth more because he's a center, and he is consistently a PPG player.

that being said, i think perry's value is closer to spezza then it is to pomminville. and yes, i think spezza is worth WAY more than pomminville.

like i said, you're entitled to your opinion, and i respect that. i probably replied a little "harshly" originally, so i'm sorry. that being said, i don't agree with your opinion. in my opinion, perry brings more value than pommer. his offensive upside RIGHT NOW is much higher then pommer IMO, and he's 5 years younger.

i don't think pommer is a plug or anything, but at his age, i don't think he's worth the "biggest fish of the year"

Well that certainly hurts my argument!
with Sabres games every other night though, I haven't watched as much of the other teams as I usually do... Plus I bartend, so watching the west coast games while I'm working really doesn't let me focus in all that much on those games...
This is a "this season" thing though right?
Previous to this year I've always noticed those 3 playing together,
Or am I mistaken?

agreed, but there will always be a few teams who will give the "big fish" their money.

but on average, you're probably right.

i think overall, average salaries will probably stay the same or go down a bit, but i think the big guys will still get the big money

I always thought so too. I guess Ryan was moved around to play on line 1 or 2 last year, this year He has been a center and playing quite well.

The big fish will always get their money, which is why I thought throughout the lockout that Donald Fehr was only working for the top 15-20% of the union. He was holding up the whole process for rights of a group of players that will always get theirs.

Well I guess we'll agree to disagree then
And this whole back and forth was kinda silly anyways
There's no way we trade for Perry
I could see us go after him in free agency, but even if we were top bidder (he's not worth 8mil IMO anyways), I doubt he'd come to Buffalo over all the other bids hed likely get from teams closer to contending
