Dan Bylsma.
Underachieving Cup caliber team. Out with the guy who taught AV everything he knows. In with a fresh voice who demanded competing & physicality. Stanley Cup. - DrChristianTroy
I found this blog, no data to back up his points, so you'll have to take it with a grain of salt.
I took a look at NHL coaching changes since 2005 and grouped them into three categories:
Off-season change (one coach replaces another in the off-season)
Mid-season change (one coach replaces another and finishes the season)
Mid-season change-turned-permanent (mid-season coaching replacement sticks around, leading the team into the next season)
Here’s what was learned:
Hiring a coach in the off-season has little-to-no impact on a team’s performance the following season. The 33 coaches hired in the off-season since the lockout have averaged a +0.5 point improvement over their team’s previous season.
Mid-season replacements almost always have a positive impact on the club. The 24 coaches hired mid-season improved their team’s winning percentage by +0.126, or roughly +10 wins over the course of a full season.
It’s not a bad idea to keep mid-season replacement coaches around. Coaches hired at mid-season, and made permanent in the off-season, improve their team’s performance over the previous season by +4 wins. This is +7.5 points more on average than a new coach hired in the off-season. |

I've never met AV, but he doesn't seem like the type of coach that's capable of motivating people. We get the same stale commentary every day, blah blah got to stick to the process, one game at a time... If the media and fans are so tired of his voice, just think how the players must feel. |

Yeah, I'd like to see his research, but don't feel like doing the digging right now. This post is from Sept 2011, http://canuckshockeyblog.com/?p=7484 if you want to have a look, he promises to get into the numbers in his "next" blog...
EDIT - the one thing I will say about hiring in the off season is that it gives you more time, and conceivably more candidates to make the "right" choice. My problem with waiting is if you had an employee in your organization that wasn't capable of meeting your expectations and his direct reports were constantly failing or under performing would you wait until next year to make a change, or would cut your loses and move forward? |

A lot can be accomplished with a good system... To win a Cup you need more than that. We want the Cup! |

I've heard that some coaches are very different with the cameras aren't around, but I do agree that AV comes off as more of a laid back type of coach and what seems to work best for team is to hire the exact opposite type of coach the next time around and vice-versa when you look at a team like the Rangers with Torts as their HC. Again I'm not a AV fan, but IMO it's too soon to talk about him realistically getting fired and I'd be totally shocked if it happened during this season. But if we get a repeat of last year's playoffs then I do expect him to get fired. A second round exit might save him or have him on a very short leash next year. Third round or beyond saves his job though IMO, that would be a pleasant surprise at this point though. |

I completely agree, but just because a coach doesn't yell his ass off at the bench during games it doesn't always mean that he isn't a good motivator. AV's downfall is his inability to adjust during a playoff series. |

kesler should work more on his conditioning in order to avoid being tagged as injury prone |

He has the body of a Greek God though! Funny how guys who are fitness freaks like Kesler, Booth and Samuelsson always get banged up. Maybe Kyle Wellwood and Dustin Byfuglien are onto something. |

I've heard too many times (even from his own mouth) that AV doesn't communicate or coach up the small things. He teaches his system and when that's not working, figures it's time to juggle lines... Because it must be one or the other right? He's such a (frank)ing moron. |

No Kesler (air cast) at #Canucks practice but Malhotra (IR) is out there. Wow.
This is such a coincidence when kesler is ready to play manny has a sudden urge to go on IR, but when kesler leaves he feels better I guess this is one of the bypasses to the new cba |

No offence Ian, but every time those guys were on the ice it ended up in the back of net, and not the right one. I don't think more minutes would have helped any. - 1970vintage

Oh I agree, I have 100% confidence that AV will not be fired this season. Gillis feels that AV is the right person for the job, he'll stick to his guns. I'm only saying that if you have made up your mind to make a change, then there is no time like the present. |

Yeah, I like it too, it helps me a lot, and even though I gave up my first round pick, I'm still happy with what I got back. |

I played in Nationals(broomball) with 2 broken ribbs and a broken hand. When I got home and went to the Dr she was pretty pissy about it. |
