The season is slipping away ... if it hasn't already slipped.

They certainly can't go much longer without making some significant moves to change the makeup of this roster.

when is the TDL we're not making the playoffs and need to rebuild our prospect pool

I mentioned this last season, your hands are going to get sore arguing; you've been warned

- JoeRussomanno

And I would have agreed with you. But things have changed. Lets hope they turn this thing around. Judt saying the path we seem to be headed down generally leads to something like this.

I dont think that would have made any difference.
The Flyers do not have enough A level talent right now.
With Kimo as captain you still have that problem.

- opeth_pa

The a level talent has been dragged down to b level by a c.

I hear ya. I didn't sour on Danny until last season. It's not so much of a hate thing as it is realizing he's in decline. I'm not sure he's even a 20 goal scorer in a full season anymore.

Making roster changes isn't going to help this team right away. I would understand if they decided to get what they can for some players.

Probably gonna have to trade some youth and let the vets contracts expire. I'd probably just let the vets expire.

Trading Mez and Coburn isn't a bad idea but it could get real ugly if this team has to play Gervais, Foster, and Lilja even more minutes.

Briere isn't going to waive his NTC. He will have to be a buyout.

I don't see the need for a fire sale, or massive trades that would blow the team up. People seem to forget or ignore that the Flyers are a young team, and with a young team you're going to have ups and downs.

The problem is, for the Flyers, it's not just the kids that are having the ups and downs. Guys like Braydon Coburn are struggling and the Flyers need him to be a rock. Guys like Briere and Timonen are supposed to be strong leaders, but it hasn't shown up on the ice.

Granted, the Flyers are missing a lot of pieces due to injury. So are other teams. You have to find a way to overcome those injuries. That's where the leadership issue comes to play.

Does it mean they need a new coach? Or a big trade? Not sure. I do want them to keep the path with the younger guys on hand. There's talent there, despite the struggles.

I'm not looking personally, but the ones with real value are obvious I'd think: schenn, couts, read, Simmonds, Voracek. That should about cover them. If they get out of some high priced vet contracts or let them expire over the next couple seasons, I think they'll be in good shape within 3 years. Of course planning to have a cup team in 3 years is like waiting for Haley's comet in this market.

Its a shorten season and I am all for keeping what we have unless the Flyers get a good deal on a vet player. Otherwise ride out this year and make the adjustments in the offseason through trade or UFA.

I still believe this team hasn't played its best hockey yet, akin to last year's cup winner.

Patience is thin in this market and it only gets worse b/c they haven't won a cup for decades.

I honestly don't think Homer would trade any of those younger guys right now unless he got offered a ridiculous trade.

Just a few thoughts on what I have seen so far.
1. As I said previously to you Bill I know Coburn is an important cog but with his inconsistencies and hefty salary not sure if he is ever going to be an asset to us. When Meszaros gets back and the defense gets sured up a bit I guess we will finally see.
2. As for trading Couturier, watching last nights game has me thinking that we have too many centermen. If Brierre cannot play wing then we are left with using Coots on a 4th line. The 4th line is not going to have the talent of a 2nd or even 3rd line and cannot be put out there for 15 minutes a game, in which case you are taking a premium center and wasting his time. Either Brierre must be bought out this offseason or Coots needs to be traded for the pieces we need.
3. Laviolette's system does not work with this group. I know that he has already tinkered with it earlier in the season to adapt to the fact that our D-men have their feet in the mud, but as a result the scoring hasn't been there nor is likely to come. At this point and time Mr. Snider and his guru's need to start asking if it is going to be easier to go out and get the pieces they need to make Lavy's system work or is it time to change the system by replacing the coach.
Lastly, part 4. Giroux, while it can be said that he has been pressing it is mostly the fact that teams are keeping and eye on him. Until the rest of the line he's on prove they are an actual threat things are not going to get better. When Hartnell comes back later this week I expect that Giroux will suddenly come alive. No disrespect to Simmonds but Hartnell is much faster at getting to the puck in the slot, this should open up the outside for more attempts at quality shots by Giroux.

I think Lavy is an excellent coach but the team is putting forth a half ass effort on a regular basis. That being said, the coach has to find a way to push their buttons. Often times a coaches job transcends X's and O's. between the shortcomings of the personnel and the lousy efforts. It's a recipe for disaster which in turn will force upper management's hand.

It hasn't. Giroux is 83rd in the NHL in scoring. Briere hasn't been doing much, regardless of if he's played center or wing. They've counted on Coburn and he's been awful. Even Timonen has had bad games this season.
