wow.
paul hamilton just tweeted that pierre lebrun says darcys contract extension is for 5 years. - FIREonICE
Darcy has been pretyt solid the last 1.5 years.. his drafts have been very good and he has gone about 50/50 on UFAs... Leino and Regehr are bad ones.. but Ehrhoff, Leopold, and Scott have panned out in my eyes...

i like darcy, i'm just surprised the term is so long.
darcy waits too long but he usually gets good value on his trades and i think part of past waiting is that he couldn't do a lot with previous owners and the other part is that his style calls for a lot of leverage which is hard to get unless you trade at the right time. i'm sure darcy has kicked the tires on trades that could make sabres fans flip (with what we got back) but i'm sure it was slightly away from his asking price and he didn't get max leverage and didn't want to do it. my hope is eventually he gets out of his comfort zone a little and gets somewhat more bold with moves, but i don't think it's entirely likely.

Agreed , Darcy is really not the problem here. He has made some really nice trades as well as the UFA's you mentioned. The real problem is the super fan owner being in love with everyone that used to wear a sabres sweater in the 70's and 80's. It really is quite frustrating to be a fan.

I don't see how Pegula's fascination with players in the 70s or 80s plays a role in the roster of today?
I think that Lindy and part of Darcy are in love with the wrong kind of players on this roster and are unwilling ot part ways with them.
They are not willing to take risks on certain players and instead of bringing in a new name they bring back familiar faces in Ellis, Hecht, and Grier.
I was SHOCKED that Lindy let Adam be our 1C for so long last season.. but then.. dog house and never to be seen again.

sometimes i think they grasp at straws and others i think they know they have holes but some aren't easy to fill so they make do.
i know this sounds stupid but getting a few extra good players through a combination trades, free agency and the draft/prospect call-ups, imo would go a long way to making this tire fire work again. the forward core is awkward right now because we have a lot of in-job training by young players and the defense is a collection of spare parts that once contracts expire will look much better (bringing up mcnabb, maybe a new veteran).
