I said the same thing in the Pens blog. Leighton let in a couple softies but he didn't get very much help. I think if the ice was better the score would've been worse. Seemed to be alot of plays Tampa made where the puck was hopping on the shooter.
- canadianpenfan

The ice was horrendous. No one could keep their feet and it looked like they were playing mud hockey. That said there were definately some chances we missed due to it as well. So hard to predict how it would have changed the outcome.

They've played 6 games. And I really hope were not going to go there about the Captaincy already.

Didn't know there was a time frame on when these things can be discussed.

I have little issue with it. Perhaps Laviolette saw the Tampa game as a tough out anyhow, and figured he'd bank the easy two points against Florida, rather than having Leighton start and possibly lose to the Panthers, making the Lightning game a must win.

Had they lost 5-3 and showed an ounce of grit and heart, I'd readily agree with you. As it is, Leighton sucked, but the team in front of him was so bad, they could have had Bernie Parent in net and still lose.

- Jsaquella

This is a fair point of view but I feel Bryz has been so solid as of late that maybe (big maybe) he could have stole us a game. Tampa has been winning in impressive fashion. Stamkos is the number one sniper in the league. I would like to see how we measure up. Losing the way we did was so predictable the moment Laviolette announced Leighton the starter. This is where my frustration comes from. We all had to have known the end result going in. I didn't watch the game. I didn't even waste my time...mostly because my computer wouldn't allow it

I'd question if he gave any effort on that goal.
- Jsaquella

I think Pronger would have called him out yesterday if he was in the room, leadership is the area they miss him most. Although knocking heads off in front of the net would have helped yesterday as well.

Anything can be discussed. But do you really think were at a point to suggest Giroux getting the C is an issue? I sure don't.

I would try to get Perry at the end of the season....since we will have money to throw out...then get Ryan TDL next year or in the offseason. We have an awesome nucleus, i dont want to see them trade anyone in order to try to salvage this season...Let the kids get the bumps, learn and grow from this.
- Philly1980

Not saying you are wrong or that its a stupid idea, but do you think adding Perry and Ryan is more important than upgrading defensively?

It's frustrating to watch hockey in those conditions. It's like Winter Classic ice every game.

The thing is, Danny Briere, Kimmo Timonen, Mike Knuble and even guys like Braydon Coburn can step up and say something

WAYYYY too early for that nonsense. If by March he is still having consistency issues, and media issues.. then its fair game.

It wasn't Leighton's job to stop Stamkos from getting/creating opportunities though. The forwards and defense were awful. You can't win if everyone plays badly.

i think its even worse than that. Winter classic ice tends to be either super hard or riddled with puddles.. yesterday they seemed to be playing in slush. i must have seen 25 different times where a guy fell... without assistance.

lol i dont think its that, at least i hope its not that...wheres brayden schenn been on the scoring sheet? matt read is really streaky, the stats say 3 goals in 6 games but we know thats not the case, statistics can be deceiving...we need more consistency and the only place i see it so far is Bryz minus the huge rebounds and crappy bounces

Someone needs to photoshop Giroux as Atlas holding a giant stone C over his head.

And Hartnell wasn't playing so you know it's the ice.

nope, didn't say I wanted to discuss it. I said I hope his play so far this year is because he's nursing an injury.

Yes but Leighton isn't our starter. Tampa is a really good team. I wish have liked to have seen how we measure up with Bryz in net and we didn't. We did not get that chance.

There was one sequence where three different players fell in the same area of the ice. Between the blue line and the circle, to Leighton's left in the first period, Stamkos, and two different Flyers wiped out without anyone near them.

I just don't see how that would have made a difference. The team played bad from start to finish. I can't imagine having Bryz in net would have changed all that much.

Was the ice bad in Florida? Like is it the weather or do the ice crew in TB just suck?
