Why ignore the contract of Lupul and not Luongo? Its a package deal, in concert with the state of the team.
So Lupul > Ovi....I didnt expect this sudden turn of events. - systemtool
Luongo is already as old as Lupul will be when he's in the last year of this deal?
not really comparable |

Okay. So lets ignore 30-34 for a guy with no consitency because we dont care about 35. Problem solved. - systemtool

Just over ppg= 2nd liner at best?
Come on, if he maintains that production, he's easily a top liner. - Feeling Glucky?
considering that he was 30th in points while missing 16 games, hes definitly a top line player. There is 30 teams with 3 players on the top line each. so the 30th highest point producer even with less games has earned the rank of top 90? |

It isnt on the surface, but when you include that one has been a model of health and consistency while the younger has been the polar opposite, it should matter.
Especially since this team is no where near being ready to compete and still is seaking that elusive elite prospect/prospects. |

Sigh.
We are going to try this again, systemtool:
To get Luongo, we'd need to give up talent.
To re-sign Lupul, we didn't have to give up a single thing.
If Gillis was willing to trade Luongo for Connolly, I'd do it in a Luca Cerada heartbeat.
But for Gardiner and Kadri and first round pick?
No thank you. |

Hey man, I'm with you on the Lupul thing. Deal just doesn't make a lot of sense right now. Overpay Lupul at the beginning of a rebuild? If you're beginning a rebuild why not trade him for a nice prospect or some draft picks? Seems weird to me. |

We also wouldnt only be getting a Connolly for Lupul. Im glad we tried this again, atomicwedgie, only to come full circle.
We also dont improve the teams long term future with a player entering his 30's with no history of consistency.
But yes Ovechkin>Lupul. |

Id over pay Lupul, the minute I know my team is playoff bound. Until then, you dont sign guys in their 30s to long term deals, unless they are elite players with a level of consistency. Why keep him if you're still not close to competing and you know he is the asset that isnt a young center piece but can bring you back a good return to keep rebuilding on.
I mean, are we building here or going for it now? Confusing. |

Thank goodness that Nonis has common sense. He has flat out said he WILL NOT trade young players for older players. |

You need talent
Luongo has talent
We need Talent
The Leafs lack a #1 goalie with talent
Aquiring talent just seems like the right thing to do.
Seriously - we need more talent.
Goes both ways Wedgie. Its the conditions and the contract that comes with the talent thats just as important as the talent itself. - systemtool
seriously... lupul is 29 and signed til 34, luongo is 33 and signed until 43... theres a massive difference... not to mention luongo is on the decline where as far as weve seen lupul is still making progress... yes he may hit his peak right away but if last year is his peak then 5.25 is a fair market value for him |

imagine if sundin was on the team we have right now while he was in his prime. it would be ridiculous - matt1337
We would have one helluva first line.
Of course, it just goes to show how pathetic this organization is that we even have to discuss that. |

Lupul has shown no consitency. We bought high instead of selling high. Bad move long term. Especially if youre not a playoff team and are still rebuilding.
Neither are the droids we should have been looking for at this point in time, unless something changes.

Nothing to be confused about. As long as you DO NOT trade your young players for older players, as long as you DO NOT trade your 1st picks, as long as you properly develop your young players, what's wrong with signing your core veterans? Every successful teams needs their core veterans. I am truly baffled why Leaf fans have a problem with this signing. |

Agreed that the situations are not similar.
I wish I could dig up the post from the blogger a couple years ago on this site, who studied when players peak. It was incredibly consistent how you can count on a production drop past 30. Not only that, but Lupul is coming off a career year.. Not only that, but there is some injury history there. |

How is not trading young assets because thats what this team needs, none of which happen to be elite, any different than going out and getting more of them and improving the odds of your pursuit of that elusive elite young player.
Im baffled how nobody accepts Lupuls injuries and inconstincies and thinks were so ready to compete we should be locking down 30 years because of one career year.
Every successful team needs to build a core of young elite players before going out and signing the older ones long term as gambles. |
