The justification is that he is a point per game player on a bad team.. more so than a PPG player on a good team... that is all that is needed... - DoctorNHL
I agreed. We dont need to mention that he has 323 points in 516 games. Not at all, because he is a PPG player. |

Are you sure Lupul is one of your favorite players?? LOL
You repeated that none stop and now comparing him to Komi..... - Cooshie
Also he thinks we should give Kadri the keys to the city after one goal..

I did say for the Leafs.. if I remember correctly that was more points than most of the guys on Edmonton.. & Perry & Getzlaf also last season.. you are cherry picking numbers and stats.. two can play it that way...

With this, you think the Leafs have a chance at any UFA's worth signing? Good luck with that! You can forget about guys like Getzlaf if you aren't willing to overpay.
I don't think Lupul was an overpayment, I think that's his actual value - Overpayment, in my mind, would have been anything over 5.5.
Also, I am not sure about you but I am not interested in a 3-5yr rebuild. I would like to see this team competing in the next 2 or 3 seasons and we will need guys like Lupul to do that.
This was a good Leaf signing - Cooshie
Im not naming names. You are.
My point is to keep cap flexibility until proven winners are worth spending it on.
Again, I love Lupul. But its too long and too much for an injury prone player with only 1 solid season under his belt. |

where's the evidence that drafting high gives you the lowest odds of failure? - Feeling Glucky?
Eberle, Hall, Yakupov and RNH versus whatever four names you can muster for the Leafs.
You want to find elite players that you can build a Cup winner around? You draft high and you draft often. Ignoring that is ignoring reality.
It guarantees the most time in the bottom, and that's about it.
What are the Leafs guaranteeing you right now? A fruitless dream of 8th place and a 1st round exit? You like those dreams?
And then came JFJ. Youth for age for years... leaving the cupboards dry.
Nobody's advocating that.
What you are advocating is the same crap that JFJ and Burke tried to do for the last eight years. Rebuilding while trying to make the playoffs doesn't work. All it does is leave you in mediocrity until you have to do it all over again in five years. |

Why do Perry and Getzlaf keep coming up?
It just shows how little you people have to justify the nonsense you're trying to defend and explain.
Its not a game, and you think you're amazing because you won by beating nobody at a game that doesnt exist.
You're using Lupuls career year, and ignoring ever other year of his career to justify your point. But ignoring the consistency, and awards and cups that the guys you mentions have won. |

Nobody said there is only one way. The point is trying to do it the best and most logical way.
Look at the Blues now. Lord how envious I am of that team... - systemtool
how many high picks are on the Blues?
Pietrangelo and...?
Johnson became Stewart- an 18th overall pick and Shattenkirk- a 14th overall pick- a steal of a trade.
Draft well, but you don't need to tank to do it. Manage your assets well and you'll do well. |

Thats my point though. They kept their picks and built patiently.
They gave their young kids top roles and here they are now. So why not trade Lupul, build properly and patiently. You just proved with the example above that it works.
I never said this team should tank. I said they should only have signed Lupul if the playoffs were a reality, and if/since its not, then you trade him to improve the future because the "now" isnt good enough. |

I was just arrogantly pointing out cherry picked stats to prove.. it can be done by many.. and on some decent players.. you do realize Lupul had to contend with some injuries.. & blood disorders in that time.. that you cherry picked his numbers.. when I was being exact about his performance for the Leafs

It's more than the Leafs have.
Without Johnson, it's impossible for them to get Stewart and Shattenkirk.
Oshie, Perron, Backlund, Backes and Tarasenko helps too. |

JFJ didn't try to rebuild. He got rid of youth for older guys.
Burke added a lot of talent to the Leafs. To ignore that is to ignore reality.
This is a pointless discussion. I admit that the way you want it to go can work. Just like building through trades and signings can work. Teams build through both methods, and the methods wind up working at the same pace. Since the lockout it's been half half. |

Yes, its nonsense to play Kadri 9 minutes. You're so right. That'll team him not to every try that scoring nonsense again. |

I am giving you an example of a player that wouldn't have a chance of coming to Toronto based on your philosophy of not overpaying for UFA's. That and Lupul was not an overpayment...he just wasn't a discounted signing either.
Lupul should be part of our long term plan unless he would have been able to get us a good first round draft pack (which no one in that position would give up). |

Most of the teams that win cups generally do all of them well. Draft, trade, and sign free agents. |

Most of those teams are budget teams. Who are they? Just look at them. Florida, Islandes, Atlanta, Columbus.
Look at bigger market teams and what its done for them. LA, St.Louis, Chicago, Pittsburgh.

because by all accounts he's a good leader.
Vets help the young guys get established. That's why Edmonton brought back Smyth.
That's why St. Louis didn't dump Backes, and brought in McDonald. |
