Not an easy situation though. Try run the numbers through cap geek for next year. Without Luongo gone, there is virtually no way of getting under the cap. A Ballard buyout, Booth trade, and I still don't think they're there. - Dirte
They have to get rid of him or Schneider in the summer. I was talking about this season though. |

Yeah. As it is, even with Ballard bought out and Booth traded (if they can find a taker), they've got 12 players at $52M. That leaves $12M for 11 players, with both goalies. And that's without Higgins, Lapierre, Mason Raymond, or Schroeder re-signed (they're not really losing anything else of value). If they want any sort of a third line, or fourth for that matter, it's impossible to keep both. Maybe they end up buying out Garrison with their second buyout? |

balllard actually has been playing his contract value. He's been great with tanev.
Eventually luongo will get traded to a team he desires to play for. |

But, not buying him out means $8M to spend on 10 players. I don’t think that’s possible. |

Getting Luongo now is insane. Look at the numbers of the Leafs cheap young goalies:
Ben Scrivens 8 14 1.93 230 .939 2
James Reimer 10 20 2.31 281 .929 1 |

I wouldn't say it was "insane" before but it never made sense at any point, in my opinion.

You'd basically have to bank on Luongo ending up on the LTIR to end his career in order for him to not screw you over at some point in the future. |

You're basically banking on that to happen if you take him on. Not a fan of that. That or maybe you trade him to a team that desperately needs to reach the cap floor before Luongo retires and they can take the penalty. I just don't like the idea of needing cap circumvention in order to not get screwed over. |

you don't think so? Serviceable (if overpaid) player and a pick. You guys are thin on the wing and he's big and tough.
Luongo has been playing great so far this year. The contract is bad but the player is good. Malone + 3rd is a middle ground. |

Luongo isn't Dubnyk home slice, he's actually been doing good this year, theres even talk that Schneiders likely to be traded...not Luongo...
At first i made the mad face as a joke because i thought you were joking...but you arent...good god...no wonder the oilers havent seen the playoffs in so long...fans like that... |

dubnyk's been doing fine this year. weak trolling attempt.
as for the proposal, it's in the context that they actually move Luongo. obviously if they're not shopping him anymore and evenings suddenly working out in the locker room, all the power to ya. no reason to be a Richardbag... |

LOL, that's horrible for Van.
Would you trade one of the (currently) best goalies in the league for a bad contract?
I sure hope not. |

Luongo is playing really, really well right now. The context of this thread however, was that a Luongo trade is imminent. While that may no longer be true, I was just offering a suggestion within that context (that Van wants to trade Lu ASAP).
As you know, a lot of teams have been reluctant to give up the goods to acquire Lu. Part of it is the big contract. While I don't think the canucks would need to take back Komi or something, they would need to take back salary. Malone has 4.5 in cap hit and 5 million in salary for the next two years. That's not a ton to take on, compared to what they're shipping out. Plus, It's not like Malone would help their team as a player.
It's moot, because Luongo is not being shopped right now. I was just musing about what might happen if he cools off, or once the inevitable goalie controversy flares up again. And just as the canucks aren't selling, obviously no one buys at this juncture either. |

kessel is good but he isnt the type of player that wins championships IMO
if the leafs could get a good return on him id still trade him in a heartbeat - nightmare3020
I can't agree with you there.
To the first point... Kessel's got such a well rounded game now, he's exactly the type of winger you'd expect on a cup winner's top line, and he's shown(albeit, a few years ago) that he's got no problem putting up points in the playoffs. The guy is as good a playmaker as he is a goalscorer- when he's got another scorer on his line(like Lupul or JVR) goalies have a hard time figuring out if they should stick with him, or cheat and cover the other shooter- saw it last night with JVR. And he's backchecking well now.
To the second point... I don't see any team putting together a package good enough. It's unlikely that another bottom-feeder is going to trade their picks or top prospects to us, and a contending team won't be interested in swapping one of their top guys for him, either. We'd be looking at getting a whole bunch of secondary pieces for him. If we lacked depth, I could see it... but we don't. |
