How is my inability to watch NHL hockey a bigger loss than people losing millions of dollars? - Gunslinger
Boy your smart. Guess they wont have those few extra millions to throw on their big pile they already have. Im sure Crosby is just trying to find food wherever he can. |

Because that offer would've gotten them close to a deal then, just as it has now. Especially when you remove the lost pay check factor. The PA brought in Fehr to stand up for the players rights. Not to pick a fight just to pick one. There wouldn't be a fight if there wasn't a need for one. If the NHL had submitted the offer they last made in October. The NHLPA would've responded with a "real proposal". And there would've been an excellent chance of not missing any games. - MJL
Wrong. The difference is time.
There was TIME in October to hold out. There is NO TIME to hold now.
Even if the proposal is the same on paper, the proposal carries different relevance and importance as time goes on.
I don't believe for one second that "the current proposal" would have been accepted in October because it MIGHT be accepted now. |

Right, which in itself is a victory, if everyone expects you to lose badly, but you manage to limit the damage, that's a win. Winning and losing is relative anyways and nobody's going to be able to say if any side won until after the deal ends. I personally think the players are going to end up losing by the end myself, strictly because I have a hard time seeing the growth the sport had before the lockout replicated or increasing and with no cap on escrow, it's likely the players will end up getting less than 50% share by the time the CBA expires. Star players will be paid, but there won't be a middle class anymore in the NHL, so likely you'll have 1 superstar paid the lions share of the cap and the rest will be rookies/second/third year players on entry level deals, or players being paid the minimum or slightly more. - DariusKnight
This wont matter. The middle class will still get paid good money, just like they did coming off the last CBA where the cap dropped big time. |

Not all NHL players can afford to throw away the money they lost this year. There are not 700 Crosbys in the league. Please go away and come back as something intelligent.
Not only the players, but the lockout does damage to the NHL/Owners by being locked out in the way of even poorer TV deals, fans walking away etc. |

You can say it's wrong until you're blue in the face. We obviously have a difference of opinion. I think you're not putting enough weight on the not missing paychecks part. And if you want to use time as an important factor. What's a better offer? The NHL offer made now, or made back in October? You'd be adding close to a Billion dollars to the deal for the players. In my opinion there is no question that this offer made back in the October would've led to a quick deal, with the possibility of zero missed games. |

You are completely wrong on this one. If the NHL had submitted the offer they just submitted to the players way back in October, Donald Fehr would have seen this as an opportunity to milk even more out of the owners. Fehr's sole purpose is to get the best possible deal for the players and he had every intention of pushing this lockout to the last minute because he believed that the NHL would continue to make concessions. And he was right. so if the NHL had made the offer they made now back in October i'd guarantee you that Fehr would have added some new clauses and what not just to drag on the negotiations. IMO he would have dragged it out to where we are now except he would have gotten the players a full $380M make whole, 8 year contracts but im not sure about the length of the CBA. |

Agreed. Damn Donny Fehr.
If only Bettman was part of the negotiations in 2004, instead of Fehr, we never would have missed a season.

I disagree that I'm wrong. Fehr doesn't call the shots. The players do. Fehr knows what a good deal is, and would recognize that. The player know what a good deal is. They would've have made tweaks to the offer just as they have now. And in my opinion it would've led to a quick deal. |

Nope!
Why would the PA have accepted that offer? The offer made NOW is good enough and relative to NOW.
The PA brought in Fehr for a fight, not to accept early offers REGARDLESS of how "reasonable" they were.
Considering that Fehr/PA only submitted their first real proposal in November, it looks fairly evident that they never had any intention to accept an offer while time was still on their side. - As_I_See_It
The problem with that logic is that by holding off on any deal ....fans, sponsors and exposure have been effected......by injuring the game, they have impacted the overall revenues.....now that their share is to drop , it may be a double hit.....if the overall revenues drop and the players see their % drop then that could be trouble.....the players have not negotiated for the betterment of the game but only them selves ...that's a dangerous negotiation ploy by Fehr. |
