Ek I think you need to sit down and talk to an accountant or tax expert who handles sports franchises in the US to really understand who makes money and who doesn't, then maybe you would see the whole picture rather than the headlines so and so is losing money. Billionaires don't become billionaires by losing money and don't believe they buy a sports franchise for a hobby. Why do you think there was such an argument over HRR and the PA received almost 700 pages of financials? Out of the 30 there will be a few bad businessmen but only a few and if you really believe all these teams talked about are losing money then I have some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you.
- tpd11

Please keep going with this... because THIS is the heart of the argument. While some teams lose money - I have no doubt that individually the owners of those teams do just fine.

Go ahead and cancel the whole season and let the players look for real jobs, like the former Hostess workers, whose union likewise was out of touch. There are plenty of other sports to keep our attention. No way I'm giving these jerks any of my hard-earned money.

Do you really want Alex Semin putting the filling into Twinkies?

[quote=Giroux_Is_God]Implying NHL players read his blogs....

You think they don't?

- Eklund

I would guess no....why, being a player, would I read an anonymous blogger's work? Seems I'm wrong

That's pretty impressive!

No that is not sarcastic.

8.7 a season plus bonuses. im not even gonna mention that he also gets 10 mil a year endorsements. see this is why i cant back the PA. because people gloss over the fact that this guy is making insane amount of money for playin hockey. regardless of what he brings in or what his pay is comparable to the rest of the team, this money is just disgusting. thats like making 150,000 a week. lets hear from the PA. well he's underpaid because he brings in.........sorry deaf ears!
- joshs

There are no bonuses in Sidney Crosby's contract.

Eklund, Fehr has no choice but to have the players in the room during negotiations, otherwise Bettman would do to him what he did to Goodenow, and spread disinformation about what they were discussing. Notice that it's mostly guys like Hamrlik, who haven't been in the room, who are questioning things. I guess ignorance isn't bliss after all.

Now baseball has become a joke, and if youre not a Dodger,Philli,Yankee,Bosox fan, then there is rarely anything to get excited about.

Nothing to get excited about?

Tell that to Giants fans the past three years. Or Tampa fans. Or Rangers fans. Or A's fans. Or Nationals fans. Or Reds fans...

Yeah, and how many playoff appearances for the Jays or Royals over the last 20 years?

Fehr on Roman Hamrlik's critical comments of @NHLPA: "We don’t believe in censoring anybody ... We’re different (from) the owners.”

Hahaha... I guess Cole, and Brouwer didn't get the memo.

So wait.

You're telling me that, because the Royals or Blue Jays (who by the way beat my Phils in the 93 WS....within the last 20 years) haven't made the playoffs much over the last couple decades, their fans can't be excited for this upcoming season?

Those same Jays that just made one of the biggest trades of all time in any sport?

Those same Royals with all that young, great talent and the best farm in the MLB?

Sorry i guess i should have said 19 years.

If having 0 playoff appearances in 19 years combined is something to get excited about then have at er

The Jays finally have an ownership that is as rich as the other big teams now so i guess they get to join the club.

KC has great young talent that i'm sure the big name teams just can't wait to procure. Nothing new there.

ive stopped even replying to any MLB comparisons. it's a whole different ball game. no pun intended.
the nfl??!! not even worth mentioning.
the basic ethos of the leagues are on different planets.

we've done the no cap, big spenders etc in the 90's. the product on and off the ice was as bad as it ever has been. hence the 04 lockout.
we want no part of an mlb type league

- hugefemale dog77

Not to mention baseball has no salary cap. It has a set salary level and for every dollar you spend over it you pay a percentage into the revenue sharing pool, hence why the 31% number is so high because the rich teams pay in a ton of luxury tax money. Its not even close to being a legit comparison to the NHL system or the nhl's financial situation. Its just a piss poor point to continue a weak argument.

"The owners look at it like honing in on a system that will keep all 30 teams stable"..You know what, it was that Dopey Bettman and the GREEDY owners who took the franchising fees and placed teams in cities that cant support the NHL. The NHL should be 26 teams if not no more than 28. Its the Owners who say where the teams play. Phoenix cant support a team, The Yotes are a wining team, yet they dont have any attendance. The league keeps dumping millions of bucks into a pit. The Devils sign Kovi and yet go bankrupt. You yet again ask the players save the league from its own stupidity.

You are pretty much making Ek's point for him.

The teams GM's will continue to fall over themselves to spend as much as they can within the rules, to try to gain a competitive advantage.

If the players would just suck it up and sign, the teams will continue to find any way they can to pay the players more than they are worth.

It's called pro-sports.

The NBA players again, went from 57% to 50%

The NFL is at 48% for the players, (I believe), and still with non guaranteed contracts.

does the NHL offer look so bad?

i think the point is you're pointing to two promising teams who haven had anything to cheer for, for 20 years. because they couldnt keep up.
it would be folly to argue against the right mgmt and luck anyone can build a team to have a shot..
but
the window is probably very small.
if kc with it's great farm doesnt get it done rather quickly, the yanks will be offering up 15 mil a season for the 2nd or 3rd guy in there rotation. he'll be gone. the sox someone else etc etc.
they'll gut that team.

their only real option is to be a feeder team for these big markets. deal said players for young assets and hope they can put a team together for another run.
meanwhile the big markets have a shot every single year.

i really dont think anyone outside of the big few markets wants any part of no cap.
and even then, its shortsighted. its bad for the league.
the 90's proved this
