I'll believe something when I see it. Probably just another proposal that Wang is going to shoot down.

@TheSoundTigers: Injury Update: Sound Tigers defenseman Calvin de Haan is out for the season with a dislocated left shoulder. #BST #Isles

Good thing Donovan panned out and we drafted all those defenseman....

I'm pretty much discounting any chance of this kid having a valuable, productive NHL career. His shoulders are made out of glass, that's one major shoulder injury per season since we drafted him. He may make it but he's going to be one of those injury-case kinda guys that plays 30 games a year.

So much talent on D went after him in that draft...Rundblad, Erixon, Kulikov, Leddy, Moore. Not to mention Kreider and M. Johansson

At the time I wanted Rundblad, Kassian, or Kulikov...in that order if I remember correctly. May have even wanted Kassian over Rundblad.

In hindsight, Kassian hasn't been overly special (to this point, anyhow)...but Rundblad and Erixon both have top pairing potential. Kulikov isn't far behind them. Kreider would have been a perfect compliment to JT

Hard to criticize anyone for the draft, unless they constantly draft total crap year-in, year-out. Outside of, basically, the top 5 it's pretty much a total crap-shoot. Especially with defenseman and even more-so with goaltenders. Sucks that de Haan turned out to be an increasingly poor choice, but it's going to happen. Luckily we've hit homeruns with other d-men in later rounds.

de Haan is worthless. He's made of more glass than a chandeleir. He will never be a solid NHL player unless he gains some significant weight. It seems like every time he gets hit, he disintegrates

there are plenty teams in this league that kick themselves for passing on players it really is a crap shoot...you don't think 29 other teams wouldn't want Hamonic..you don't think that toronto wouldn't want a do over with Kadri over.. crap most of the players named are better than Hedman..you don't think they want a do over as well?

This is the best thing that could of happen for Isles brass (should I say Charles selection).... DeHaan is a bust and now it is another season to forget about him, which give you next season to rehab him and then the following to cut him and not offer him arbitration. Sorry Calvin, we never got to know you - nor should we have - he was a reach at in the First round let alone a top 15 pick.

As for the Politics of the Islanders/Coliseum - nothing will get done under the the current ownership. It does not matter if it is a Dem in office or Rep in office, proof is in the past 7 seasons "of nuttin". It is not going to happen anytime soon.... NHL is going to need to step in for results, force the hand of Charles.

I wouldn't say worthless. But every time I see another serious injury I become less and less hopeful that he's going to contribute anything substantial to this club. I don't doubt his skill, but we don't need another Martinek missing 40+ games a year on the blueline.

I agree but it just bothers me they traded up twice to grab him when nobody had him going that high. I agree its a crapshoot

It was a bit of a reach, based on the player rankings at the time. Definitely no argument there. It wasn't a pick I would have personally made, but it's going to happen and I can accept that. Nobody is going to be happy with every single pick they make, but on the whole I have very few complaints with the way they've drafted since '08.

I still contend that we would be 10x better having taken Hamilton over Strome and Grigorenko over Reinhart. Not unhappy with who we have in the slightest, but I would have preferred it the other way.

Don't offer him a contract because he is 21 and built like a 16 year old. You can't change genetics; legal anyway. He is never going to crack an NHL line up so why keep him around. More of the same, putting false hope on talent that is not there. Cut bait and move on - if he was good he like most other Canadian Jr. National members would be in the NHL by 19, not back in JR. hockey for 19/20 and the AHL for 20/21 year old.

Every once in a while it will hit me that they should be playing hockey right now and I'll get angry then I think of how dysfunctional this franchise is and I convince myself that I will be less angry if they stay locked out

You realize that more than half of each of the rosters from the two years de Haan played at the World Jr's have minimal-to-zero NHL experience.

Defensemen almost always take longer to develop. I'm not all that high on de Haan myself but I'm not ready to write him off at 21. Not like there's anybody knocking down the Sound Tigers door that deserves his spot.

I'm not waiting for anything. If you read my original post I have some major doubts about his chances of being a full-time NHL'er in the future. My point is that you don't dump an asset just to do it. If he's 24, still struggling and there's 3 capable, AHL eligible defenseman waiting to take his spot then fine, see ya. But nothing wrong with keeping him around in the minors if it's not hurting anyone.

I don't have an issue with him being there, not right now anyway. When the time comes that guys like Mayfield, Reinhart, etc... are ready and eligible to make the jump I hope he isn't there, though. Wishart is the opposite of de Haan, he stinks but he's always healthy. de Haan has the potential, but he can't seem stay out of the doctor's office.
