And there isn't a snowball's chance in hell anyone is stupid enough to take him on prior to a new CBA being inked. Why bother?

Burkie and Gillis can't say they have a trade in place it is illegal to do so and they would be heavily fined . Every GM follows the rules of the NHL just like when Ohlund was signed with the TBL with multi levels of a complex negotiated contract 13 minutes after FA opened.
